Automatic gear shift bezel

I have a 2001 TJ 6 cyl with an automatic. I need to replace the gear shift bezel (the one that tells you what gear your in) but I cant figure out how to remove the handle. Any help? I thought you just have to pull up on it but there must be some type of connection inside the handle since you have to push the button in to shift out of park:banghead:

There is nothing holding the top of the shifter on except friction. Shift into Low to give you a better pulling angle and just pull it straight off. It's tight for sure but just pull & it'll come off.

Theres not a connection for the button inside the handle Jerry?

Nope… putting the lever in drive gives you a good angle to pull straight up. It may take a bit of force, but it really does just pull right off like Jerry told you

Use both hands to pull straight up.
Don't be tempted to rock/twist the T-handle.
Be ready for when it lets go -If you wear glasses, take them off.

Where did you find a new automatic shifter bezel?

X2, and try not to have the shifter near the dash or else you'll smash your hand like I did:banghead:

We need a thread for injuries people have done to themselves when taking this handle off :D
