Oil Filter Cartridge update, please read this!

I was at my Dealer today and picked up a couple oil filter cartridges and their Parts manager had just received notice from the factory that the 2014 3.6 will take a different cartridge and it will not interchangeable with the current one been used in the 2012 and 2013. He did not have any Info as to why the change. FYI............

SilverSport 03-15-2013 07:55 PM

Very interesting.

Miser 03-15-2013 11:50 PM

I wonder what is the driving factor for this change...........
For use that have 2012 and 2013s this maybe a concern!

jadmt 03-15-2013 11:52 PM

Probably a new head design that changes ithe filter location

Blastek 03-16-2013 12:54 AM

maybe it will fix the dry start

kbwwolf 03-16-2013 05:49 AM

On a related note, I saw a cloud yesterday that looked like exactly like a Jeep grille, except it had triangular headlights. Made me feel funny. :)

Nah IMO, the same filter is used for a lot of other Pentastar engines including pre-'12 GC and 300's and there are a lot of those, I would be a little upset if I were the parts store guy......that makes ANOTHER filter they need to stock.....never had a problem finding one for my '12...even when it was "brand new"

DFW6ER 07-02-2013 10:56 AM

Stopped by O'Reilly's last night for a Wix cartridge filter....at the checkout, the guy was like, "That'll be $14.99 before tax." I laughed in his face, said the dealership around the corner sells them for $8 a piece and that's more than a lot of places, so thanks but no thanks.

I recall reading somewhere Allpar maybe? that the change was to get all cartridge filter engines on the same P/N including the 3.0 Diesel in the '14 WK2.

legitposter 07-02-2013 12:35 PM

Chances are the redesigned filter cap required a change in the actual cartridge. Maybe fitment issues.

fljeepleo 07-02-2013 12:45 PM

The sky is falling!

Yea, I believe it was the entire unit, cap, base etc.

On another note I picked up a new cap for the 2012 and the thing had an expiration date on it.....not sure it was a "use by" or "replace by".

I need to take another look.

And that's the cap, not the filter, right?

Old Dogger 07-02-2013 03:39 PM

A member of the Jeep Garage FORUM had a filter housing split on him. I seen pictures of it.
It split at the taper in the housing, where the oring makes contact.

I don't know if it was a defective housing, or he over tightened the cap...............

Over tightened I'd bet. I've split many a threaded PVC pipe fitting by over tightening them......

That would also be my guess.............;)
The recommended torque is 18 pounds, so I use 15 and call it good!

I saw a thread on an issue..the cap broke inside the housing and they could not get the remnants out of the housing, had to replace the entire unit.

Needs to be tightened to 25 Nm according to the cap instructions....

Newton Meter. Snotty Euro/scientist/metric for torque..

25 Nm = 18.4 Ft. lbs. (you're right on)

Exact same thing happened to me. I purchased my first Wix there and it was $8 something. When back and they said $14.99. I laughed and walked out. Amazon was my next stop for Wix filters. Amazon Prime got it here in 2 days.
