MREs?

Here's an off the wall question:

A buddy of mine just gave me a few cases of unopened "new" MREs. (that is "Meals Ready to Eat" for you non-Army folk)

Question is: I know their shelf life is like 43322453 years or something, but how long are they still "good" to eat? The outside of the box says they were packaged in June of '94.

I'm guessing they have expired and I think I'll only use 'em to show my kids what they are (one kiddo is all about Army stuffs). :D

Shelf life depends a lot on how they were stored. Shelf life is highly dependent on storage temps. MRE's kept at 40* may stay good for 15 or 20 years but the same MRE kept in the back of your Jeep may get funky after 3 months.
Even when out of date they're generally safe to eat they just aren't quite as tasty.

this site has some good info
MREInfo

BTW, if ya want to send a case or two this way I'll be happy to test em out for ya.
We use em for camping and emergency kit rations.

x2 what Skeet said, and don't eat the scrambled eggs.

ccain 11-03-2008 07:58 PM

X3 on what skeet said and don't eat the beef frankfurters!

I'm not a vegetarian but I found the vegetarian meals to taste the best... And they always had the best candy in 'em!

h8nagn 11-03-2008 08:09 PM

It is all edible as long as you use the micro-bottle of tabasco!

cavediverjc 11-03-2008 08:16 PM

Beef ravioli was my favorite.....it came with a chocolate chip fudge brownie!!

Cain is right, the veggie meals always had M&Ms or Skittles!!

I don't know where he stored 'em...guessing in his garage so being in south Texas, that could be 110+ for summers.

It's all "edible"? Even after 14+ years?

If anything I do remember my dad saying that even when fresh, stay away from the cheese!

I alway liked the Omelete with ham or Beef Stew with the cracker crumbled in them and the tabasco. They sure have come a long way in taste though.

Well I have eaten lots and lots of those things, and I am not an expert but I figure if the thing is good for say 10 years, do you really think its gonna go bad after that?:D

I was in when we did the transition from C rats to MRE's, towards the end we were getting C rations from 1956. The MRE's I normally don't trust more than about 5 years if they have been stored in a good controlled environment.

Eat one and report back in about an hour. :D

The chocolate chip fudge brownie rocks... As long as you smother it in ranger pudding! :D

You know... In the field we would prescribe MRE's to aid with gastro-intestinal issues... Yup NOTHING will block you up like an MRE! ;):D

Don't eat the Veggie Omelet... Ugh. I've actually got a Sloppy Joe one sittin' in my Jeep right now that I brought home from work.

Also, a few years ago I ate one of my dads that he saved from Desert Storm. Chicken and rice, still delicious, and 15 years old!

There is a company that makes trail food MRE's and a rather tasty. You can find them at sporting good's shops and camping supply stores. I can't remember the name of them, but the beef stew and chicken & rice were awesome.

I had a case show up in the back of my LMTV during OIF 4 from 1974.... I didn't die from them.. Hell I don't remember how old one of the MRE's I got over there was but when I opened it, it still had the little pack of 3 or 4 Lucky brand smokes in it. I didn't eat that one.

I have about 3 cases worth of newer MRE's laying around the house right now. I use them all the time for camping and such. I eat them for lunch at work about 2 times a week when I can't get away for chow. They aint bad like most ppl say they are. Yeah a few of them taste like crap but oh well. If anyone around Wichita KS wants some to try, come and get em'.

Oh and KEAT...... I have a veggie omelet in the mail to you. :D

richp 11-04-2008 07:54 AM

The commissary's around here sell them, $5 each last time I looked. I've alway tended toward the franks and beans, C rats or MRE's, you can't go wrong with franks and beans, as for packing you up, peanut butter works every time.
I used to get a chuckle out of one of the old C rats meals, title was 'chicken or turkey', like they didn't know which except it had white feathers when they packed it.

Sure miss the pound cake though, and the orange cake, add some rum and let it soak for a while, yummy....

Man... That thing is vile. I don't know who thought that packing a yellow brick of rubber in an MRE was a good idea, but they should be shot.

Wendy's has a dollar menu. :wavey:

The "newer" MRE's are great, my personal favorite is #18 I believe, Chicken Tetrozinne?(spelling is not my specialty).

The Double Stack kicks the hell out of a McDonald's .99 double any day.

chezuki 11-04-2008 01:24 PM

Edit: However, I do believe the McDonald's double cheeseburger comes closer to the MREs shelf life.
