Ok so I just picked up a free 85 cj7 the only issue is that there is only half of the wiring left I know that the ignition modual has to be wired in but other than that is there any way to streight wire the engin to see if it will run it has a 304 in it

Positive from battery to ignition coil. Negative to ignition coil. Negative from battery to frame/engine block. Temporary wire from positive battery to starter solenoid to trigger the starter. (Basically just duplicating the ignition switch.)
Painless Wiring has a bunch of PDF wiring diagrams available on their website... some of these show simple starting circuits.

So the ignition modual does not have to be wired up for it to start

If it is stock engine, then no you do not need to power the ignition module. It the engine has been converted from a carb to a throttle body injector setup then it's going to be a whole different story.
Old carb engines are really simple... just need power for spark and for starting and they will run.

Ok thanks im a chevy guy so I know how to just make them run but had been told it had to be hooked up on a cj even with a carb thanks for all the help!!

Yes, the ignition module has to be hooked up. Something has to trigger the coil. Pour gas in the float bowl, hot wire the starter, and vroooom. DO NOT pour gasoline into the carb throat..lol
