Sputtering Help, lost

Hey guys, maybe someone here can help me out. I have a 94 YJ, 2.5. Been running great till last Thurs. Ran out of gas on the way home from work. Pulled over and put about 3 gallons from my jerrycan in it. Was going OK for about 10 miles then noticed I was loading speed. Then started sputtering and back firing badly when I gave it gas. Thought maybe the gas in the can was too old or dirt in the can, so I changed the fuel filter. Worked fine for a bit, but now I can go about 50 miles with no issues then looses power and sputters and backfires again. Changed another fuel filter, and problem still continues. However I noticed when it starts loosing power and sputtering I can turn it off and back on and the engine runs perfectly fine. Sometimes for a mile sometimes 50 miles. I'm at a bit of a loss. Sending unit maybe??? Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I would check your fuel pump pressure at the fuel rail make sure its in specs.

I am thinking you MAY have put a bunch a crap in your tank that COULD be clogging you fuel INTAKE........ when you shut Jeep off....... crap falls away........ when you turn it back on.......crap begins to accumulate again until clogged.....

I had this IDENTICAL issue with a Lube oil pickup on a Gas Turbine in an natural Gas Field in West Texas about 6 years ago...... yeah.. I know.....not a Jeep..... but similar symptoms

I was thinking the same thing since I never had the issue before putting the gas in there AND the problem going away with cutting ignition. If I'm correct the sending unit has a filter at the bottom of it. I've never pulled on but researched some videos. Guess I'll give that a try. Plus it will give me a good opportunity to look in the has tank for dirt and crap.
