The pro's and con's of running with out a track arm
I have done the front half of a 4 inch rough country lift of my YJ. I stopped when I got to the back and found that the rear track arm bracket was broken and the arm was just hanging there.
I have heard that running with out a track arm is dangerous and yet others say they take theirs off completely. I was just wondering who has them off and who has them on and why, what is your experience with running like that?

Try search we beat this dead horse all the time. Trac bars off. Sway Bar ON for safety.

Try a ride for a day or two without and see how you like it. If it feels unsafe out them back on.

I took my rear one off a couple years ago and removed the front one a few months ago when I installed my 4" lift. It gives a smoother ride, and it allows it to flex more. Some say the Jeep gets a little squirrelier, but I haven't noticed much of a difference. And you have to move them or get a longer one when you lift it anyway, so just save the money and take them off. I bet you'll be glad you did.

Some lift kits tell you to remove the rear one.. I don't run either rear or front.. I also don't run a sway bar.. but only because it rusted away and I need to get one... but that being said.. Mine rides better than the 05 highlander we have.. go figure...

Both of mine were removed. Rides MUCH better. Still handles fine at 70mph on the highway.

There's not any "cons"

I removed mine.

I noticed that if you makne an error (hitting brakes hard steering and over currecting) the jeep is less forgiving.

As long as you know how to control your jeeps body weight (even in panic situations) you will be ok.

Now if you are a young or inexperienced driver or if you have other people drive your jeep. You should keep them on.

Ok, I am in the presses of my 4inch lift on my YJ. The rear track bar has been removed and thrown in the corner. "Glad for every one who share their thoughs on that as well.
Should be done with it to day but, I have heard some things and can not find what I need to know on here so, I will just throw it out there.
After installing the lift, I am keeping every thing snug but not tight till It gets down and the weight is back on the suspension and bounce on the front and back to make sure every thing is where it should be.
My question is this, is it a good idea to loosen the LCA as well while every thing else is loose and then tighten every thing back up to factory specs?

Just did mine last night. Took the front off and drove it around to see if I liked it. Went right back home and took the rear off. The ride is incredible. Kept the sway bars on till I get to the trailhead.

I took the rear off, tried without the front but didn't like the way it handled so I put it back on with an extension bracket. I found that by freeing up all the stuck bushings the ride improved quite a bit even with the front bar on.

yes, you want all bolts loose when you set it on the ground. Shackles are most important where they go into the springs and bolt onto the frame mounts. All 8 bolts for the leafs should be loose. Set it down, then tighten them up. I had to swing my front shackles back a few inches to almost 90 degrees to get them to reach my 4" lifted springs. Then when I set it down and they compressed the shackles pushed back to where they should be. If you tighten any of the shackle bolts before setting it down, it will not allow the springs to flex under the load of the jeep and you might as well be driving around on top of a bouncy house lol.

Took the front and rear TB off mine and what a driffrence! Love the ride and its so much better on the trails.

Ditch them.

They prevent lateral movement of the axle, so good if you want a REALLY stiff suspension that is low to the ground for cornering, but this is a big, clumsy Jeep, something that already corners piss poor. There will be negligible differences in cornering without the Track Bars in place, the Sway Bar is more than enough to keep the Jeep parallel in a turn.

Track Bars actually bind up the suspensions flex- the VERY thing the suspension was designed to do. Often times the result is a broken Track Bar mount because the suspension is fighting the bar the entire time, even going around a modest corner. SOME flex is normal in a turn, that's just the suspension doing its job.

Just keep in mind you aren't driving a race car. Not that you will flip your Jeep any easier with or without the Track Bars in place, but just don't take a street corner at a stop light at 30mph like you would in a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry..


Coil Sprung Jeeps are an ENTIRELY different animal. They completely require a Track Bar, as well as Control Arms in place to keep the axle from shifting out of position. Coil Springs can flex in any direction imaginable, so they do not bind up with all of this nonsense in place.
