jeep wrangler tops explained

Hi out there. I am new to the jeep world. My wife has dreamed of owning a jeep for decades, so we are looking for a good used wrangler, circa 2002-2007. In searching ads and auction houses, I have become confused with the descriptions given for the tops. CV, for convertible top, is a soft top ? RT, for removable top, is also soft ? Other than seeing pictures of wranglers with hard tops, I've not seen any abbreviation for a hard top. Also, are hard tops also removable ? Do they all have wiring systems in them for rear defrost or rear wipers ? I see aftermarket hard or soft tops out there. I've tried checking the net, with no luck in explaining all this. Help !

All tops are removable, whether they are hard or soft. I have never seen any of these abbreviations though. Hard tops should all have the wiring for the rear window defroster, but if you buy a used one its probably not going to work. Check quadratec.com they have a lot of hard and soft tops, although the hard tops are extremely expensive new.

in my opinion, a soft top is better. it is more versitile. plus the soft tops that are made now are very good, they dont stretch like they used to. With a soft top you can put it down whenever and where ever. plus there is no storage issues like with a hard top. hard tops are big and bulky and you nees a place to store it when it's not on. as for the abbreviations, i've never heard of them. to me it sounds like a cv is a soft top, and a removable top is a hard top, but i'm not sure on that.
