Coilovers - Pictures and Information
 
I may never have the money to do coilovers as I'd do 100 other mods before I change out my suspension.
but.... I want to learn.
Tell me everything you know about it... Best kit, best manufacture, the differences between normal and coilovers, the install, just anything you know.
I'd really like to see pictures too.. they don't even have to be yours.

I think your best bet would be to go over to pirate and read through the tec sections and builds.

I would say KINGS would be about the best coilover out there. If you go through GenRight they sell KINGS and they have them pre-tunned to our jeep setups or they will tune them the way you want. And by a kit, I figure you mean that it comes with everything you need to mount the coilovers and again I would say GenRight since they have the front hoops and rear outboard setups that come with the KINGS and they run about $1,500 for just a set for front or rear.
There are other coilovers out there like Fox, Sway-a-way, Bilstein, Icon.

If I didn't go with MC 6paks which I think is a better way of going, I would do coilovers just for the fact that they are compact and don't have to worry about the shocks and springs on a regular setup. That I think is the main reason some go to coilovers.

Here are the two setups they offer. They also have a newer front setup.

Very far from it. In the years I spent doing track days and racing SCCA I discovered what I now refer to as the "Image and status culture effect". Out of all the guys (not all were dumb kids) that had coilover setups on track days, maybe 5% had any clue why they would make any one of the several adjustment options they had access to or what the compounding effects would be. There are volumes of books on the subject though and some of the ones I've found are quite good.

KINGS does look very good and I have looked at gen rights kit. How are your coilovers working for you?

The "best kit" is made with a JD2, some tube, and a welder. You can't go wrong with king shocks. Genright makes good stuff too. One of the main reasons I want to put on COs is to run proper dual rate springs.

I don't know if it was just a guys set up or if it had anything to do with coil-overs but we have two JKs in our club that have about the same hight in lift and they are both 2 doors and the one with coil-overs seems to be much more fluent in its transitions when in the rocks. But like I said it might be something else that caused it to flex out so much smoother. I'm also no expert in them and my eyes could be deceiving me.

I don't have coilovers because I went MC 6paks. Which are 14" travel in the front and 12" travel in the back without having to do outboards.

Coil overs are supreme in tuning.
Also? You can have a shock with it as well for different dampening/tuning.

I'm running King's and GR's kit. The install is less than easy especially on a stock width axle. If you have any specific questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

That's a nice rig. But elaborate a bit on it. What problems did you run into with mounting? What was in the way and how did you end up mounting them? Do you have a custom CA setup? If so how is it setup?

Not so many 'problems', more like 'challenges'. First off, to run the stretch and the outboarded CO's, you need a lot of parts. Genright has everything you need and is very helpful, but not exactly cheap.

Challenges I had: Notching the frame is no mean feat. I had a friend who is a certified welder help with the cutting and the welding. If you're running a stock width axle, You'll need to flip the rear calipers around to the front of the discs. You'll need to source an LJ e brake cable. You'll more than likely need to run spacers to keep the tires off of the new CO's.

I had the RK X factor long arm kit, so I called them and had them make up a set of new CA's 4 inches longer. They were very helpful.
