OK, so I wanted a place to share techniques for preventing and dealing with rust for jeepers up north who drive in salt all winter.

I have a 2008 JKUR which I plan to keep for a long time, but the appearance of rust is threatening to screw up my plans. Here are some of the issues, I was hoping for help with:

LITTLE CHIPS IN THE PAINT: We’re talking a tiny chips in places like the front edge of the hood. If they are still clean, I understand that applying the MOPAR paint, should seal and protect them, but how do you deal with them if there is rust on the bare metal? I don’t want to sand and make a small chip into a huge one….

UNDERCARRIAGE: Are there any treatments you can apply that will prevent rust but not be a PITA when you want to wrench on your Jeep? Now here’s the million dollar question: My jeep never had the treatments done before I bought it, so it is naturally rusty underneath. Is there a treatment that I can apply to an already-rusty undercarriage to clean or at least stop the spread of rust? Anything that’ll not make it too messy to work on? Someone mentioned tar… any details on that option?

DOOR AND TAILGATE HINGES: The paint seems to wear off there from the rubbing and they are all rusting. Should I sand and apply more paint or something else? I can’t really sand inside the hinge, how do you get rid of rust in places you can’t sand?

AFTERMARKET PARTS: Right now I have a no-name hilift-type jack on a tailgate hilift mount. Both are rusting. I’m afraid that when I get an aftermarket bumper and winch (I’m looking at the XHD bumper and Qtec winch combo), those will rust too, which is a much bigger deal. Not only does rust erode the metal but it also makes the jeep look so “out of shape”. How do you prevent and/or deal with rust on after market parts. Any particular tricks for winches?

SHOCKS: Bright red rear shocks look good until they rust. What do you do for those.

WHEELS: This one I got covered. I just sand my winter steelies back down to metal and apply anti-rust paint to them, being careful not to paint the tires.

OK, I would appreciate anybody’s wisdom here, especially for the undercarriage part. Please share any useful techniques that have worked for you. Jeeps are so amazingly useful for smashing through winter I'd hate to see winter beat my jeep on the long run.

I have the same issues, looked at a ton of jeeps and finally found one from TX with no rust, but been living here for over 30 years so I know what to expect. I normally first tackle the frame issues with a good heavy cleaning (use a wire brush for the surface rust and a handheld sand blaster for really pitted areas then primer as needed and color coat) and then undercoating usually an oil base application with a undercoating gun, then do the tub (the next project for Betty). The paint chips can also rust as most primers are porous and allow water entry over time, even a phosphoric based etching primer will rust in time so get those covered ASAP with paint and a clear coat as this is what protects from UV penetration also. There are really no good ideas I have for the AM parts or items as these are normally very thin in coatings, maybe look at powder coating as many parts as you can for durability (my son-in-law has access to a huge powder coating unit for his company and coats all my stuff for cost of material), I know several companies offer a home based kit if you have an old oven you can us(not one still used for food).

I have an 08JK. Absolutely "No rust issues". PNW Oregon doesn't salt roads. Yet.

For the little chips, the dealership keeps telling me that the MOPAR paint they sell is all the protection I need. Others have told me to apply a clear coat. What are your thoughts on that?

For the aftermarket parts, is there any benefit to applying a spray-on anti-rust paint over their factory coating before installing them?

How often do you wash your Jeep in the winter time? I am from and live in Michigan and we get lots of salty roads!! I make sure to wash my Jeep every week regardless in the winter time! I had mine undercoated when I bought it which should help out some as I plan on keeping mine for a very long time as I do my other cars.

I've had my Ford Focus for 9 years and is my daily driver and it does not have a spot of rust on it anywhere, and it was NOT undercoated. But again, I wash my Jeep and Focus every week. Keeping it clean will help out tremendously!

I picked up a can of this: AMSOIL MP Heavy-Duty Metal Protector for the undercarriage. It leaves a light waxy coating on everything that repels water. I have tested it on a few spots so far but haven't gone crazy. Others on here have reported success with it.

That's great. How mucky does it leave the parts you spray? Will I regret it when I come to change parts?

I bought a rust remover that apparently dissolves rust, paint, everything and brings parts back to bear metal. I have yet to see if it works, but I am tempted to scrub/sand the whole underside of the jeep part-by-part to bring it back to bare metal, then spray rust-proofing paint, and apply a protector like your wax solution. Is this a good idea? Is there any risk to this approach, like that I might remove an important coating. The way I look at it if a part is rusting whatever protective coat was there is already gone...

Are all rust-proofing paints equal, or does anyone have a particular recommendation?

It still seems slightly tacky after a week or so. I would imagine it will eventually harden more but still be pliable. As long as you don't spray it on heavily and cause runs, it shouldn't get very "mucky". I have an '84 Camaro that has a similar waxy undercoat and zero rust.

POR15 is good for use over light rust. Do a search, there are probably tons of threads on it

I originally planned on doing the same, but then every day I find that the roads are wet with salty runnoff such that the salt come back to quote the jeep the very day I washed it. We just didn't have too many dry-road winter days this year. So I stopped washing it so often. As you can see in the pic, there is a dirty gray layer of salt on the jeep that coated it all winter. (I actually washed it since the pics were taken since winter is basically over now.)

I know what what you mean about the roads staying wet and salty all the time. There were even times that I washed it and by the time I drove it back home from the car wash, it looked like I didn't even do it. But I still wash it every week regardless. I spend almost as much time spraying the undercarriage as I do hand washing the paint. I refuse to let a layer of rust inhibiting salt stay on my rig for more than a week.

Hmm. probably why you have no rust. I think I'll be more diligent with the washing from now on.

I'm also putting together a plan of attack for all the types of rust I listed in the original post. I will post it here soon.

I wish I could wash mine during the winter but if I did that, my jeep would be a block of ice. The winters up here are too harsh to allow that. Last time I did wash it, I ended up having to bring it to my mechanic and leave it inside his shop overnight as nothing would open except the driver door. That was when the temp was about -35 celcius :(

I just cleaned off the last layer of winter grime today. I was pretty good over the winter but I still see some surface rust forming on the doors.

It looks like its just the clearcoat right now so I am going to clean up the painted surfaces as soon as the rain stops today and then for my fenders (I have the ace flatties) I am going to pull them and sand down a few spots and bedline them again.

I was really shocked to see this on a 2012 JKU and then I remembered I am in Ontario Canada, there is soo much salt used here it is ridiculous. Now I need to clean up whats formed and try harder next winter to wash more often.

I have a few friends who always spray wd40 on tools to prevent rust would that be a good way to keep rust away from some areas.

OK, so here is my game plan for the UNDERCARRIAGE

1. Wash away the Jeep with an acid solvant to bring it back to the bare metal. (Anybody has a good product suggestion for this? If not I use the cheap stuff I bought at Canadian Tire.)

2. Paint every part with rust-proofing paint (is Rustoleum good?). A few coats.

3. Apply the AMSOIL wax-like metal protector that jceo suggested above.


As far as I've gathered, this should give me the best of all worlds, maximum rust removal (don't know how successful that stage will be), long-term paint protection, seasonal coat protection.
Unless anyone suggests I do otherwise, I think that's the approach I will take for the undercarriage.

For the Chips, I am still unsure. For sure, I have to sand down the rust and apply the MOPAR paint. But some people suggest applying a primer first, some people suggest applying a clearcoat overtop. I even heard someone strongly suggesting applying epoxy on the metal before painting.

To prevent paint chips on hood how about a clear bra? While don't own a jeep yet, shopping my current car is a 2003 and I put a clear bra on when I bought and there are no chips what so ever.

PS: Live in CT lots of sand on the road.

I used the Amsoil HDMP on my 2011 GC and no rust after 2 full Chicago winters. Sprayed my used 2012 JK when I bought it (it hadn't seen a snow yet when I got it) and have been through mud & snow --- no rust yet and the HDMP is still stuck to both, a thin film. Highly recommended and easy to apply. One $10 spray can easily does a Wrangler and 3/4 of a can covered my GC

X2 on the clear bra. My brother has high end cars (Astin Martin, Range Rovers) he has clear bra covering installed on all of them and no problems with paint chips. I'm gonna have mine done this spring on the hood, windshield frame, and cowl/vent piece on the O8 JK and my hood on my Grand Cherokee. If installed by a certified technician, it also comes with a warranty. May be pricey, but well worth the money.:thumb:

Keeping the salt and road crud washed off is the key. Like somebody else posted, wash once a week. I can't wash mine myself up here either when it's very cold. I go to the car wash and get the undercarriage wash, soap and liquid wax. It ain't cheap, but it's worth it.

Doing other preventative things probably helps, but I think the best and easiest way is fresh water to wash off the salt water.

WOW makes me glad I am in Florida, I only have to worry about getting the beach sand out of the carpets.

My father in law put a sprinkler head on the end of an 8ft pvc pipe attached to a short piece of old garden hose. Turns the hose on and runs the sprinkler up and down the undercarriage after a run on salty roads at the end of the day.
Drains the water and disconnects and rolls up the hose and puts it in the garage. Takes about 5 min.
As for the high lift jack. Store it inside the or only mount it in the winter if you're wheeling

I just purchased mine in december, it had very little rust when I bought it but even after one winter the paint is starting to peel on the differentials and some weld spots are rusting on the frame. I will likely get it oiled underneath every fall. That will give it a good layer to protect it from the salt. If you do that, do not pressure wash the underneath as that will rinse the oil off! Other than that I will get under it in the spring with a steel brush and some rust paint. Its about all you can do.

Ok so for the undercarriage, someone recommended that i don't use anti rust paint but a spray on zinc galvanizer like this (pic). Anybody have experience with this?

I plan on using por-15 this summer on my frame rails and axles to prevent rust.
