Alvord Desert Expedition
Howdy Oregoners :wavey:
I'm up in Seattle, but spend as much time as I can in the Alvord Desert. Planning a trip down there this spring, it'll be my 7th time. I know, from experience, that there are a ton of dirt roads and trails all over the desert, and was wondering if anyone ever does a several day off roading/camping outing there, because if so, I want in :D
Or if any of you know of some good, fun roads out there if I end up flying solo.
All there are are "jeep trails" out there! We go to the Steens every year for vacation. Last year was the first time we went on the south side and experienced the Alvord Desert. We didn't have the jeep so we didn't do much out there. However, we have the jeep this year and are going to be all over the area, literally!
We plan to tow the jeep over. Park the camper at Page Springs or the Steens campground and take the jeep out from there. We go off into the wild blue yonder looking for wild horses. There is a huge BLM Herd Management Area (HMA) for Coyote Lakes-Alvord Desert. We haven't ever seen any of those horses. Maybe this year we will!
Where do you go on trails? On the east dide of the desert? Or do you stick to the Steens?
Well I've only been down there once in my Jeep so far, so I haven't explored much. I went down there in my Daewoo, drove the refuge, almost got stuck, broke down, came home, bought a Jeep, haha. I've driven around the East side of the steens, to Mickey Basin, as well as the White Horse Ranch road, and the Steens Mountain Loop several times but I'm looking for a less "maintained" network of roads. None of the dozens of maps I have show the small off-shoot roads... I suppose I should get a GPS :P
The wild horses are beautiful... it's a pretty amazing to see them out in the wild :) They're extremely skittish though, so keep a distance in order to view them effectively.
