Go Topless run May 18th, 2013

Wanted to put out the invite to any that would like to join in on the 6th annual Go Topless Day run.

https://www.facebook.com/events/471892589525274/

We've done it every year except the first (missed out on hearing about it). There will likely be two different trail runs, which are still being decided upon. Updates on the FB event page or the FB group page will be coming soon. But save the date.

These Go Topless days are stock-friendly, for the most part. Just a way to introduce those not familiar with offroading to the 4x4 world.

Pat97tj 03-28-2013 09:43 PM

What time and where do y'all meet for this run?

abqtj 03-30-2013 02:17 PM

It will be early and pretty much an all day ride.

I will be prerunning some of it shortly and we will post up the times, locations, and trails in the near future.

Sounds interesting keep us posted I may be able to do this one with ya.

abqtj 04-03-2013 08:36 PM

Will do

The pre-run Tuesday let us mark off a trail for sure...it was gated :(

I should have firm trails and meeting points in a day or so. I'll post up here and update the FB event too.

Any new info on this? Facebook says 50 something are in.

abqtj 04-15-2013 01:25 PM

Yes,

We have two trails to choose from for everyone. Those looking for a shorter day can do the Riley Loop, which starts in Magdalena, NM and will meet back up with I-25 at exit 175 a little south of Belen.

The other option is Monticello Canyon, which is further south. This trail starts west of T or C and comes out near Magdalena and the VLA.

I'll have meeting spots and times shortly. Those doing Riley will want to top off fuel tanks in Socorro. Monticello will want to top off in T or C (or Elephant Butte).

Both are very scenic areas and should be a good time.

Awesome I am going totally naked!!!! ( no doors no top ) perverts!

So far I'm a maybe. Close to a planned week trip.

abqtj 05-10-2013 04:20 PM

When: May 18
Where: Meeting at the Wal-Mart parking lot in TorC on Date St, exit 79
Time: 9:00, leaving promptly at 9:30.

We will be meeting at the Walmart on the north end of town at 9:00. Keep in mind the meeting spot is 150 miles south of ABQ and about 75 miles north of Las Cruces to plan accordingly. There is fuel near the meeting spot so show up at 9 ready to go. The plan is to head to the trail running it from south to north. When exiting the trail you can return to TorC or continue north through the VLA and taking US 60 back to Socorro.

We are not planning on a second group doing Riley unless there is more interest. There has only been one vehicle that confirmed for Riley and that's just not enough.

I think I'm in....will be a long day but fun none the less

abqtj 05-17-2013 08:49 AM

Cool, it'll be nice to meet a few new faces.

abqtj 05-18-2013 09:01 PM

Started with 15 Jeeps. At the end of the canyon, Old Rojo and 3 other Jeeps decided to head back downstream the way we came to return to T or C (where they had a trailer). The rest of us continued on north. I hope everyone enjoyed the day, I know I did.

My trip was 12 hours and 400 miles on the nose door to door.

I tried out the Everytrail App for the first time, hope I did it right!

We did the Monticello Canyon, which was a lot of fun. Gotta be 75-100 water crossings, which is highly unusual for trails in NM. At the end of the canyon we parked at this spot that said "Sacred Ground" with an arrow to the trail that goes to the warm spring start. Got up there and met a man and his family clearing out the spring with a backhoe. They have to clear the debris every couple of years to keep it nice. We had a great chat with him and got a nice history lesson on the area.

This canyon was the site of many Apache raids, among other things. Pretty cool area.

At the end, I headed over to the VLA for a short bit since I was so close. I was REALLY hoping our trail would have got us close to one of the antennas, but it wasn't in a configuration that put them out that far :( NRAO Very Large Array
