Bestop HighRock Element Doors Review

I've been wanting half doors probably about a week after taking delivery of my JKUR. The Mopar half doors are incredibly expensive so I began looking around for alternatives.

I finally decided on the Bestop HighRock Element doors since they offer so many configurations and versatility.

I will build up along the way and eventually add the enclosure panels and bags. I may eventually get the uppers but it's not a certainty. Since this isn't my DD I don't usually drive in inclement weather. Sure, we get pop-up storms here in NE FL but it's nothing I can't just wait out or power through.

They showed up today like this.

And are packaged nicely in plastic and foam.

Here's the small hardware that comes with the front doors. You have your keys, limiting straps, latch panels, and mirror mounts.

I had originally planned to paint the doors Commando Green to match my Jeep but I'm thinking I like the black better.

As documented by many comments around the internet these do have some rattle when assembled and latched on the Jeep's latch.

I added some black tape to the latch and it alleviates the play in the latch.

The doors swing sturdy and true on the hinges without any play. The welds look clean and the finish is nice and uniform.

I'll update this thread when the rears arrive and as the doors evolve into their many configurations.

Very Nice! Thanks for the valuable info!

Love these - have had my eyes on a set since last Nov. when I bought my Jeep.
One of these days...

Thanks for posting. They look great! I've also been wanting a set but it is one of those mods I haven't been able to bring myself to do.

It looked like your doors are hanging in the background. What door hangers are you using? I think that is one of my main reasons for not getting a set. Every wall in my garage has bikes hanging on it and I don't know where I'd keep 8 doors. I have a shed but it is full of lawn equipment and kids bikes. Not sure I could make them fit or that I want to as the kids are in and out of it all the time

Door hangers are from skinnypedal, net:D They are not very quick on communication or shipping but everyone says they are solid. Mine are still in the box. Dammit Kramer!LOL;)

^ Bingo!

They're the door hangers from SkinnyPedal.net. Awesome hangers.

Thanks! Now can you tell me where I can buy some additional wall space to hang them on? I'm thinking I won't be able to convince my wife they make nice "art" in the living room. :)

Nice. I came very close to buying a set this year (fronts and rears) but picked up a Rampage Recovery bumper and JKS quick disconnects instead. Still on my short list of stuff to get.

Timjeep 03-28-2013 07:35 PM

Congrats!

Kramer, we had this discussion a couple months ago on the forum. I like the Bestop doors I have. Waiting on you to get the enclosures, so you can tell me how you like them! I have been soooo close several times on buying the enclosures from quadratec already painted (they've been in my cart several times)........ I need to man up and just do it:whistling:

I really like the looks of the enclosures. Cheaper alternative to half doors.

My eBay OEM style replica mirrors came in today and I got them mounted up to my Bestop Element doors.

I love these mirrors. They're exactly the same as the OEM mirrors, being manually adjusted as the only discernible difference.

The finish on them is great and I love how that finish perfectly matches with the new matte black finish on the Element doors.

The doors don't come with hardware to mount mirrors, nor the mirrors I bought. I made a trip to HD and came out with exactly what was needed.

You need 4 M8x1.25x30mm bolts and 4 lock washers.

http://i.imgur.com/zB0kBp4.jpg

It worked out great that these were cap screws and already black. I had planned to paint the heads black to match the mirror mounting cups.

http://i.imgur.com/wO7D1qg.jpg

You put the mirrors through the two large holes in the door and mount the cup on the back like so:

Of course better quality daytime pictures will come. These doors just got better with the addition of these mirrors. You can't beat them for $60 for the pair and they are on solid and match great.

Texas_Jeep 04-03-2013 09:15 PM

This is on my short list too. These look great

mcdull 04-03-2013 10:48 PM

My only complaint about the element doors is the door straps. They have tiny opening that it took more time to slip them into the door hook then the whole installation process. I almost gave up and was going to email Bestop they gave me faulty straps

I also recommend using 03-06 TJ mirrors replica, cheaper and don't stick out inside that much. I couldn't find black fender washers to match black paint though.

rics1997 04-03-2013 10:53 PM

This is high on my next Mod list. Been wanting them for some time now

Timjeep 04-06-2013 05:12 PM

Kramer, which seller on eBay did you buy the mirrors from? I searched on ebay and couldn't find the ones that looked like the factory ones. I've used the rugged ridge round mirror that mounts on the windshield frame, but don't really like the way it looks with the Bestop doors. I looked at Bestop mirrors, but the reviews on Amazon were bad.

Thanks

They have some quirks but are great for the money.

I used a 3/8 drive extension to stretch out the loops. I couldn't even get mine over the hooks when they were new.

Nice picture of the JPi rig with the enclosure kit. I've been looking for more pictures of those installed.

Check out THIS thread starting with the linked post and beyond and you'll see me and CJ go back and forth about the mirrors. I actually called up the company like CJ and they knocked a few dollars off the eBay price.

Same as OP. Want mopar half doors but they cost a bundle. Figured I'd go with the painted elements instead. And if/when they get scratched up ill just rinoline them.

Just can't get myself to pull the trigger and order them.

Found one picture with painted element doors. A member on the forum, Blackbeard1718 posted this in 2009. Looks good to me. But this is the only information I can find on someone that has painted the doors. I too need to pull the trigger on them. Need to find someone to paint them. Not concerned about the uppers everyone bitches about. I'll just watch the weather as I do now when I put my element tubes on.

If you order new they come painted with factory color.

A note of caution- the paint is chipping off my OEM doors on the edges from removal. Impossible to touch up. And I typically use work gloves. Buying a longer pin system so they're easier to line up. Plus those stupid door edge protectors. I already beat it up enough on the trail.

Barmanvarn 04-27-2013 05:30 PM

I've just about decided against these doors from the reviews I've found.

My soft doors will work for now. May save up for mopar half doors down the road.

I thought I would contribute to this thread...

I picked up a full set of these doors with 4 bags included for 1000$. They are in really good shape and apparently were only used once...older guy bought them and hated the noise.

Ordered a set of mirrors from part source with 1 day delivery for 65$/mirror. Finding the bolts to fit was a pain and once mirrors installed with spacers I noticed that when the door closes the bolt head rubs on the end of the dash panel. I hope it doesn't create large scars from opening/closing.

First thoughts are that I like them...but they are new and the novelty of them is still 'neat'. They rattle slightly but only over large bumps like rail tracks and less so when the uppers are on.

When I adjust the uppers to fit snug at the top of the door frame I find it compromises the fit at the bottom...which secures with Velcro. I picked up some 2'' industrial Velcro to hopefully help with the seal...we'll see when I get around to doing it.

I didn't like the metallic look so I plasti dipped them but apparently did a crappy job because they look streaked.

Kramer have u done anything different to seal the bottoms? There is significant light showing through at the edges and i can see me getting soaked during a rain....

Bump...

Been thinking about the trail doors....

simdps 01-24-2014 03:40 PM

They look nice do you like them ? Will you put them on other two doors ? Looks good.

Barmanvarn 01-24-2014 03:45 PM

Never did pull the trigger on these. Ran my soft doors from late March to early November this year.

I'll probably just hold off and buy mopar half doors in a year or so.

Based on the reviews (and cost) I'm thinking I would just go with the frames, not the skins. Hopefully front and rear.

I love them... I spray-bombed mine a Rustoleum color that isn't exactly Commando Green, maybe this summer I'll get a quart of the actual paint. If it were just me, I'd probably run doorless, but these make my wife a little more comfortable with the kid in the Jeep.

Its currently about 9 degrees here. Looking at this pic is bumming me out. A great big:flipoff:to you warm weather guys! :)

Cool...
Do they rattle?

And yup....I think that is how I'm going to "justify" these.

I may add the pads from a bmx bike to the top bar so I have a soft place to rest my elbow.
