Koz Offroad in Michigan (warning, long)

In March, I made the mistake of purchasing a rear swing-out tire carrier from Koz Offroad. On his website the bumper looks great and had everything I was looking for: high-lift mount, CB antennae mount, reverse lights, even a CO2 mount! I called James at Koz’s and talked with him about even doing a custom color and he said “No problem!” So I went ahead and ordered the bumper.

The first indication that this might not have been the best idea was the fact that it took over a month for the bumper to be completed. The website states that they will have any stock bumper done in 2 weeks, so I was a little surprised by the extra time it took. This wasn’t really a big deal to me at the time, I wasn’t in a hurry. Every time I called to see when it was going to be done, he had to call the paint shop to check and he was “going to call me right back”, which he failed to do. So I had to call him back every time except one. (The fact that I had to call repeatedly to get a completion date should have been another red flag.) When the bumper was finally completed, I drove up to his shop (about 95 miles one way) and picked up the bumper to save on shipping and prevent the paint from being scratched by FedEx. It looked great, but he didn’t have the mount for the tire there, they had forgotten to paint one for the TIRE CARRIER!

I finished the install of the bumper and swing arm, only to find that I had the wrong mounting hardware for both the latch and the CO2 mount (provided by Koz Offroad). Not having a full shop with taps and hardware laying around (or anything to do on a Saturday) I made the trip back up for him to complete the install of the CO2 mount and the latch for the swing arm. At this time I also received the painted mount for the tire. I thanked him and was off on my way, only to get home and figure out that I couldn’t mount the spare tire on the tire carrier if the CO2 mount was also on the swing out because the tire rubbed against the bracket for the CO2 tank.

I called James and he apologized for the mistake, they had given me the wrong bracket for the CO2 tank and they would ship another one to my home right away. I received a call from him a few days later wondering why he hadn’t received the original mounting bracket back (he had enclosed a return label in the box). When I told him that I hadn’t received the replacement yet he said that he would check on it and “get right back to me”. After I called the shop twice, I finally was told that FedEx had “lost” the package and that he was shipping me a new one. When I received the new mount, I put it and the CO2 tank on the carrier, only to find that I STILL couldn’t mount my spare because of the bracket’s size and location. I tried to fit the bracket between my spare and the tailgate, and it won’t fit without rubbing on the spare, even with the bracket tight against the tailgate. The bracket is either too large, or the tire isn’t mounted far enough from the swing out (or both).

I called James at Koz Offroad again once I discovered this and have not heard back from him for 2 weeks now. He has received 2 emails and I have called 10 times in the last 14 days (8 times during business hours) and haven’t received a call back to address this issue. I am at the end of my rope at this point and I am going to call my bank today (luckily I paid with VISA) to see about stopping payment on this bumper. I will have to return the bumper to Koz Offroad also.

Additional issues that I am having with the bumper: latch won’t stay closed, opens to the safety catch after 5-10 minutes on the road, the bushing that they use is too small on the swing hinge so the carrier sags so badly that my fiancé can’t close the carrier because you have to lift it so far… Also, they didn’t allow for the bolt heads on the CO2 mount, so the tank handle has to be forced under the cross bar of the swing out.
Sorry about the length of this post, but I wanted to make sure that you all got a good picture of what I have been dealing with and you can warn anyone thinking of purchasing ANYTHING from Koz Offroad.

So what do you guys (and girls) think? Am I overreacting?

I'm pretty sure I'd react the same way. For starters, if they say they can deliver in two weeks, then they should. If they can't, then they need to state otherwise. And I'm sure you didn't pay next to nothing for it, so if you're going to drop that kinda cash on a bumper/tire carrier/etc, you should get exactly what you pay for and it should work as they say it will. In retail of any sort, if you buy something and it isn't what it is supposed to be, you return it for the right thing, get your money back, or get something else to replace it. Why should the off road community be any different? I'd say return the entire thing, get your money back and buy something that is worth that kinda money.

I second that, and I`ll restate it in my own way.

Take it back-now.
demand a full refund for equipment that is faulty.
If you must absolutely positively have one of these bumpers, have him make a new one, to your specifications and measurements, AND have it wrote down on a quote- in quote, "price, painted, perfect fit, and NO shipping". Have him eat the shipping charges for your time spent traveling to the shop with the defective part.

AND, if he balks, laughs like a mad man, and looks like he`s gong to faint on the spot- Call VISA, tell them your haveing problems with defective equipment bought through a VISA card, that your completely unhappy with the item-AND that in its present state that it was delivered in/ installed- its completely useless. ..AND, the owner of the company refuses to refund the money for an item he sold under false pretense-Visa has been known to completely refund money in such cases.

you have absolutely nothing to lose, and everything to gain back.

DO NOT sit there and mope about it- do something about it.

Update - I finally got ahold of James at Koz Offroad. He says that he was out of town for a couple of weeks due to personal issues, and that things weren't handled well while he was gone (major understatement). So he told me to bring the Jeep back up and he would make it right. So this past weekend I made the drive to his shop and he had a totally new tire carrier/bumper waiting for me. In about an hour he and Art swapped the two bumpers and I now have exactly what I expected the first time! It is a great bumper and will be on his website in the future. Thanks for letting me vent guys!

Well, now I'm envious of jeeperman, but don't tell him. He gets the "big head".

Me and my big head are back from a great weekend in Canada! I will post pics when I get them back!
