CB radio basics?

I am thinking about getting a CB for my rig and was wondering what people would suggest and what the basics needed to start is. Quadretec has a combo that has the Uniden Pro 510xl, antenna mount, antenna cable, and FireStik Antenna, aside from a mount for the radio is that all I need?
Also I think the idea of have a PA is pretty cool, someone told me that all you have to do is plug in an additional wire, and then I read somewhere else that you have to buy a certain CB, (I know regardless you have to have a speaker for either one, any suggestions on this too.)

Thanks!

I run a cobra 29 and a 5' firestic

The CB Radio from quadratec (Uniden PRO 150xl) Will not come with the PA function. You need to get the Uniden PRO 520xl if you want to run a PA speaker as well.

I would recommend going to this website instead of quadratec. Plus you can upgrade to the 520xl for $15 more.

Thanks! I like that site, it gives more info about the parts. Any suggestions about the height or brand of antenna? I have noticed alot of people say Firestik, I don't know anything about the range associated with the height. As part of the started pack I saw it only goes to 4'...?

For offroad use, you don't need an especially tall antenna. As my antenna mounting height changed & my TJ got taller, I went from a 4' to a 3' & have been with a 2' for nearly ten years now. Properly tuned, even a 2' works fine for up to at least several miles which is more than enough for offroad use.

For safety reasons, most 4x4 clubs & events have banned antennas taller than 48-52" or so.

A Firestick FS series of antenna is rugged and more easily tuned than most other antennas & is available in most heights. A FS-2 is a 2', FS-3 is a 3', etc.

+1 on right channel, I have also found some good deals at www.walcottcb.com.

As far as brand I would stick with firestik or wilson, they seem to be in front of the rest as far as cb goes. Wilson is a bit more flexible, firestik a little more popular.

You can have a short antenna, but the shorter the antenna is the better you are the higher the mount is. For trails pretty much anything bigger than a duckie is fine. Above 4' you won't really get any benefit over a 108" whip, which is generally a bad idea to have if you offroad, so a 6', for instance, is pretty much pointless (not really smaller, but not as good). But again, relative height is more important than overall height (generally speaking). The point being the more antenna you have above the roof line, the further you can talk. So if you want a bumper mount, get a 3 or 4'. Taillight 2, or 3 (or 4). Spare tire, 2 or 3'... but as said, on trails it doesn't make too big a difference.

A good antenna and a bad radio work better than a good radio with a bad antenna.

Nice, I forgot about that website. After seeing your reply I remember someone pointing me there last year when I asked about the QTec kit as well. Any input on which mounting bracket is the best choice? I was thinking the TF mount but once I get rid of the factory spare tire mount I'm worried I will have to find another solution.

Thanks for help, I am getting ready to order the radio real soon. Any suggestions on a speaker for the PA?
