Wrong engine in Wranger?

I bought my first wrangler, 2004 Rubicon, a couple of months ago. Today I went to do my first oil change and purchased the oil filter listed in the book/fram website for the 4.0L, model PH16 to be exact. Luckily I checked before draining the oil, it looked like I bought incorrect filter. It had in it a PRIME POF195, which is equivalent to fram PH3600. After checking it out, it looks like this filter was used on the Jeep Liberty 3.7L engine. What is going on here? Do I have a 3.7L in my wrangler when the sticker under the hood says the 4.0L?

Thanks for anyone that can shed some light on this for me!

Joe

The 3.7 is a V-6, the 4-0 is inline. May be the wrong filter, but you have the correct engine! Oh, and welcome!

well if you open the hood and look, the difference between the 4.0L and the 3.7L is very obvious. the 4.0L is an I6 cylinder, the 3.7L is a V6.

There are multiple filters that will "fit". The PH16 is the correct filter. The PO or shop justed a different filter. (You can fit a PH8A with is a much larger Ford V8 filter)

It is definitely the I6...I guess they put the last guy put the wrong filter in it. It is a longer/thinner filter than the PH16. I just exchanged it and installed the PH3600. Is there a performance difference for the different size filters?

My TJ definitely has the wrong engine, it should be a 5.7L Hemi !!! :)

BTW, welcome to the Jeep world! :thumb:

As long as the volume of the filter is close to the same there more than likely isn't much difference in performance of it. Maybe they didnt have the right one at the time but the other one worked fine in its place.

Or maybe it was a Walmart oil change and tech didn't know left from right.

I bought my Jeep from a ford dealership and it had a motorcraft filter on it that's larger than the purolators that I use now.

See post #4 above.. PH 8 is specified for Ford vehicles but will also fit the 4.0L

I stock Pennzoil branded filters at work, and the filter listed for the 4.0L is considerably smaller in diameter than the PH16, etc. It isn't the "wrong" filter, it's just smaller diameter.

Thank you guys for clarifying this for me. The Jeep community is awesome! So glad to be a part of it now! Keep wheelin' dudes!

Probably was for a Ford 4.0 V6.
