Need advice on brake repair!
So I just got a rather surprising call from the dealer wanting not quite $700 for a brake issue.

My parking brake hasn't been working well (at all) so I took it in to have them take a look. They said mud had gotten up between the rotor and parking brake shoes and both need to be replaced.

I won't argue that the Jeep has gotten pretty muddy, but I always do my best to spray everything off within a day or two.

Is $700 for parking brake shoes and a rotor crazy? I'm not sure on the labor involved but it looks like the parts are maybe $100-150 tops.

Any input is very welcome at this point. Really hoping I don't have to sign off on a $700 repair...

That's kind of what I was hoping to hear. How technical is it compared to installing a lift kit?

You can order the entire parking brake setup as an assembly. See pic below. No more expensive than just the shoes themselves. So about $200 for parts to do it yourself.

Thanks guys. Going to have a friend take a second look at it with me tomorrow, but $200 sounds a lot better than $700!

I might start favoring the rocks over the mud...

Two months ago I paid $800 at the local Toyota dealer for a 2006 AWD Sienna brake repair. It needed a new caliper and rotor for the passenger front. Caliper siezed and warped the crap out of it. Also replaced the other front rotor as well.
Two rotors, a caliper, two sets of brake pads, and labor for $800 at a Toyota dealer. Expensive, but not quite as expensive as what they are asking from you.
The labor is the rediculous part. But it's all relative. My employer charges the customer $500-$1000/hr for my labor(MRI/CT service) depending on the day/time.

I had some warranty work done on mine a while back and a skid had to be droped for something. The called me and wanted 450 bucks to do it. I drove up there and had it droped in 5 minutes and put it back on in about 10 minutes before I left the next day with it. I never do anything but warranty work at a dealership.

I ended up free during my lunch break and took it to a local shop for a second opinion. They pretty much confirmed what the dealer said but are going to replace both the rear rotors and parking break shoes for about half the price of the dealer and only maybe $100 more than what I could get the parts for on my own.

This week's lesson: If you sink the Jeep in soup, pop the wheels and clean your rotors AND parking brakes.
