Spring Creek Apr 6th

My buddy Matt and I are are gonna hit up Spring Creek this Saturday. Not sure how the snow level is but even if we only get to mess around on the 1st obstacle, he wants to test out his new front axle before our Moab trip in a few weeks.

If any one wants to meet up we can meet at the Starbucks parking lot at the Downieville exit. Not sure what time yet but probably around 9 ish.

It's off I70 just past Idaho Springs.

JCro99 04-03-2013 01:01 PM

Sorry, I guess I could post a little more info on the trail for those that don't know. It's about an hour outside of Denver off of I-70.

Also, does anyone know if the rock slide on Saxon mountain has been cleared and/or is passable?

Rooster454 04-03-2013 02:36 PM

I'd be all in to join you, but just read that they got lots of new snow up there, per the words from backcountryislife and he lives right there in Dumont 2 mins away. I won't be satisfied with just hitting the first obstacle. I have a score to settle with the 2nd

backcountryislife 04-03-2013 04:31 PM

kinda funny... he asked me a few hours ago... that's why I took that pic!

I think you could have fun, even without going up to 2nd and beyond... there's a ton of fun climbs at the town site, and those climbs with snow would be pretty cool. 1st will be dry, pretty much guaranteed unless it snows right before you go. it gets hit with the morning to mid day sun really well, and tends to stay dry. WORST case scenario, if the approach to 1st (N side of the mtn) was snowed in, you could go down the easy side of 1st, turn at the bottom, and come back up!

I think it's worth it, if I wasn't sledding I'd come along.

backcountryislife 04-03-2013 08:46 PM

I'm here for you guys.

Tonight I took one for the team, and purely for "scientific" purposes I ran up first... little snow on the uphill side of the approach, and bit of mud right before 1st, but it's open for business!

brought some cheesehead buddies along for the ride

Kaleb, don't pretend like you did more than basically drive out of your front driveway for these lol.

Rooster454 04-03-2013 09:26 PM

Hahaha what a sacrifice to make for boring scientific purposes :thumb:

How was the trail heading up there?

Well... yeah. Buddies showed up from WI, and I told them to hop in!

Trail coming up has snow on the uphill side... but no biggie, the scary side is dry.

I just did a quick lap before going for groceries, but I guarantee you're good to go up to the town site... you'll have fun.

The mud made 1st more interesting than it has been in a while, so that was fun! Scared the crap out of my buddies! Usually I roll up 1st like it's nothing, had to reposition a couple times today... good times!

I wish I could make this run, but I really have to finish my CJ first.

With a garage like that, that would be my winter project

backcountryislife 04-04-2013 08:06 AM

IF I can get my truck back from ATS tonight & get my sled deck & sled loaded, tomorrow afternoon I'm going to go head up to the mine sites, and then hike a ways out to 2nd. If at least 2nd is open, you can turn around right above it, and that would add to the day a bit.

One thing, do NOT turn onto blue ridge (the left turn after the little drainage, after the turn to 2nd) there's an ice flow there that could be covered with a little snow to make it look ok... it's REALLY bad, and even if you pass the 1st one, on the next corner it's even worse.

JCro99 04-05-2013 03:07 PM

Planning on 930 am at the starbucks parking lot

JCro99 04-06-2013 09:50 AM

Running about 15 min late

JCro99 04-06-2013 10:41 PM

Well it went pretty much how we thought. 1st obstacle was nice and clear and fun. Then got about halfway to 2nd obstacle along the shelf road and the snow got too deep. Too risky to go further.

We went back and played around in the area before the shelf road and then went across the highway to Red Elephant Hill. It was a little muddy and small patches of snow but mostly dry and we made it all the way to the top. We checked out the truck that rolled a few months ago and is still down the hill. Not sure how that is ever gonna get pulled from its current spot.

Fun day all around.

I hit Spring Creek today and will give the same report - The trail was clear up to the switchback just past the old mine shaft, then it got hairy. Good times though!

backcountryislife 04-07-2013 10:43 PM

I heard from a buddy that a friend of his flopped on 1st on sat... any of you guys see that?

I would have gone to help... but i was kinda busy.

JCro99 04-08-2013 01:20 AM

We were there around 1015 and no carnage at that point.

backcountryislife 04-08-2013 08:55 AM

looks like he messaged me at 5, so it must have been later in the day.

Crappy way to start the season though huh?

Igrok 04-08-2013 11:24 AM

they did a good job of cleaning stuff up, no sign of it on Sunday

backcountryislife 04-08-2013 12:07 PM

well that's pretty cool. I get sick of seeing piles of crap from people who can't be bothered to clean up their litter. Timmy G gets 2 points in my book!
