Checking for TPMS on takeoff tires...
 
Hello all,

I have tried looking for an answer regarding this and have not been able to come up with a solid answer. I got a set of standard 17"/32" take-offs from my dealership to replace the 16 steelies on my 2012 JK. However, I have fallen victim to the forums and want to upgrade to 33" Duratracs or something similar...so long story short I am looking to sell the low mileage 17" take-offs (less than 100 miles) sitting in the garage to lighten the blow on the upgrade.

Is there any way to tell if the tires I got from the dealership have the TPMS sensors still in them? I know they often take them out and put them in the new tires but I am not sure. There was some confusion at the dealership on what model year these came off of so putting them on my Jeep my not answer the question because I thought I read the '12 uses a different frequency than the '13's. Otherwise I guess I could take one to a local tire place and have them check but I wasn't sure if there were any superficial identifiers to make it easy.

Also is there even much value added to sale value for them having the sensors in them?

look at the valve stem. If it is metal, then you have the tpms sensors. If it is rubber you dont.

I don't think that is true. I didn't have metal stems and had TPMS sensors.

I would say you most likely have the sensor. They would have to deflate the tire to get the sensor out, doubt they went to the trouble.

I've changed tires/wheels twice so far. The first time I had them put the sensors out of the OEM wheels and put them in my first set. It was pretty useless since I kept them at 30 PSI and the warning goes off if you're less than 35. This can be fixed with the AEV Procal though ($150).

When I got my second set of wheels, I didn't want to bother with having them pulled and moved again. Plus, I wanted the tires mounted on the wheels before I got there so I could just get in and out fast.

So I currently don't have the sensors in. I got the Procal and turned the warning light off. Pretty useless anyway since I air down and back up at least every few weeks now. Plus, I've gotten pretty good at eye balling my tires to know if they're the correct pressure.

My stock tires (Sahara 255/70r18) have rubber valve stems. Also TPMS PSI level must be as wonky as the factory springs. Mine does not come on until I hit 30 PSI, I always ran 33 psi with my stock tires.

What year?

I know the sensor that was used in the 07-11's and maybe 12 was a metal core. They do have rubber ones out there but not on any JK's ive seen.

'12 It may very well have a metal core, but the exposed stem is rubber (rubber coated?).
