How far can I get on 35's with 28 Spline?
 
Well, found out today that I don't have the size spline I thought I had and that I actually have 28 spline axle shafts.
I'm running a Dana 30/44 Combo (28 spline shafts in the D30, not sure what is in the D44 because I haven't had to break it down yet).

The Jeep came with 35 inch tires on it so I'm wanting to know how far I can get continuing running them with 28 splines. Am I going to snap shafts as soon as I go offroading or what? How far can I go before I'm pushing it?

I just had the front axle partially rebuilt (right axle shaft, carrier and bearings) so I'm pretty pissed I didn't know this. Otherwise I would have just had them upgrade everything.

I know that I need to be running chromoly axle shafts or at least 35 spline shafts for 35's so that's why I'm asking about my current set up.

Ton's may be in my not so distant future because that will be the cheaper route compared to beefing up this axle combo (at least I think).

Your front Dana 30 uses 27 spline axle shafts, your rear Dana 44 has 30 spline axle shafts. You're good to go for 35" tires so far as the strengths of those axles go. Alloy/chromolly shafts are not usually "needed" until a locker is installed into the axle. :)

Thank you for the honest reply. I have seen umpteen post where Jerry has given good advice on the boards. Usually people see this question and automatically say no 35's on stock axles. I tried to ask some guys that wheel this same question and no real answer other than, axles need to be upgraded.

I'm looking at lifting 6" with 35's but not sure what I need to do with the gearing or axels. I have a 00 sport with Dana 30 on the front and Dana 35 on the back. The rear ratio is 3.07 now. I'm buying a SYE and CV driveshaft with the lift

In stock form, your rear Dana 35 isn't strong enough for 35" tires.

Regearing is a given with a tire that big but regearing doesn't do anything to make it strong enough for 35" tires. There are upgraded axle shafts that can do the trick. I used to recommend Superior Axle's Super 35 kit which beefed it up so it could easily handle 35" tires but after many years of being a manufacturer of highly respected upgraded/stronger axle shafts, they are now out of business. Ten Factory, Yukon, & Alloy USA make stronger axle shaft kits. I don't believe G2 has anything for the Dana 35 yet.

What would be the best gear ratio to run with all these changes? The jeep is just for play. Not a DD

Assuming your transmission is the 5-speed manual, 4.88 is ideal for 35" tires. If you have the 3-speed automatic, 4.56 would be the right choice.

I guess I've been reading the posts where people were locking the axle and then upgrading the shafts, that's what probably confused me in thinking I needed chromoly shafts. I see those posts a lot and just instantly though I would need chromoly shafts for 35's. Thanks for straightening that out for me.

I'm not really planning on locking it until way far in the future. I'll probably take it out first and then see what I need from there.
I was about to ask what gearing I should be at running with 35's but it looks like someone asked that question and you answered that. Looks like I'm right where I should be.
