Fuel gauge poll: Does your fuel gauge work correctly?
I haven't even tried to fix mine because of what most say here.
So, does your fuel gauge work correctly?
Just a yes or no would be great.:)

Mines works fairly well. It does bounce but that is expected. When I'm on E I know I have 2gallons left.

I've cleaned the contacts on the gauges and the entire circuit board. I've also had the sending unit out and cleaned it and the connectors.

Yep, took some work cleaning connectors, but works like a charm.

Kind of.. Starts off at a full tank and after a few minutes of driving displays the correct reading.

No. No matter how many times I squeeze the handle at the gas pump, trying to top it off, when I get in it always shows a little under full.

It also seems like when I get under a quarter tank it drops rapidly

Peepers 04-11-2013 02:18 PM

98 TJ, dead nuts E gives me about 3 gallons in the tank.

roadyrob 04-11-2013 02:26 PM

sorta works, registers full when full, empty when empty but sticks in between.

Nope. It reads full when its full, then drops to E in about 20 miles.

kik 04-11-2013 03:14 PM

89 4.2 20 gal. tank. Yes. But, when full it registers approx. 1/8 of a tank past the full line which I think is normal. Afterwards, it registers normal until empty.

Mine has always worked the same, its just always wrong, I tend to ru out when the needle hits the red, and below 1/4 I stall out taking left hand turns....

I actually have the small 12 gallon tank (yes its actually 12 gallons, no the hose mod cannot be done....), but plan on upgrading to the bigger one eveltually. so Ill fix it then, kinda grown used to it.

Aero tank installed with its own sending unit assembly. Bounces around a bit (but that's expected) and also shows E with a couple gallons left but does work consistently that way so no problem.

Kind of, Mine was stuck on F when i first got it, took it apart and cleaned the connections, goes to full when full, seems to work fine, but once it gets to half a tank, it has about 3 gallons left. I've gotten used to it now, so it don't bother me and it's much better then being stuck on F in my opinion

sinbob 04-11-2013 06:10 PM

:nonono: It reads ok until it gets to about 3/4 tank then any wiggle and it drops to empty. Turn it off and it will read correctly until a wiggle or bump. Then when it is on empty there is still 3 gals left.

ddferdt 04-11-2013 06:14 PM

Nope. When it hits a quarter I know I have about 25 miles left in the tank. Other than that it reads okay.

Thanks to everyone who replied, so far.:)
Ok, it's been almost 24 hrs & we've tallied up the answers.
8 yes and 13 no.
Some of you described how your's works & said 'it kinda works' or 'it works but it don't', so I decided if it work correctly or not.

I don't wanna lower tank to work on it, so I'll just fill it up ever 225 miles or so. If I ever hafta drop the tank, I'm gonna replace everything with new.

Thanks again & more replies are welcomed.

Senojelyk 04-12-2013 11:59 AM

'95 with 225k and yes it works just fine, but it doesn't hit "F" until after I burn a few gallons following fill up, goes further right.

CHL 04-12-2013 12:15 PM

Yes, over full seems to be the norm. So that makes it 9y to 13n.

Scott-CJ8 04-12-2013 02:14 PM

Yes - mine works great

BillMichaels 04-12-2013 02:22 PM

Mine was hit & miss for the first 15 years. I then needed to replace the fuel pump, and sending unit. With the new one installed I added 5 gallons of gas and adjusted gauge to 1/4. I added 5 more and adjusted it to 1/2. 5 more and 3/4. 5 more and it was full. It still acts up. I have never relied on "Fuel Guages" in any car or motorcycle. I go by the odometer all the time.

307jrv 04-12-2013 02:27 PM

Mine works fine until the last 5 or so gallons, then it drops just above E and sits there till empty but by then I usually put gas in anyway.
