Kiddmen57's 2013 JKUR Build Thread

First jeep and this morning woke up to perform the first few mods to her. Have a few more ready to go but no time today as there is a lot to do with the family.

First up were the ACE sliders. great product and super easy install. By myself I think it took 30 minutes. Having air power helps of course.

Before:

Then it was on to DE/RE-Badging. I really like ghosted effects so I picked up the silver rubicon hood decals and removed the fender Wrangler and Unlimited decals.

Off with the fender decals:

Looks good! What was your process for removing the original emblems/stickers?

Kiddmen57 04-13-2013 03:46 PM

I used a hair dryer to help peel them. Then goo gone. Then cleaned with soapy water.

Nice Jeep.

Love the photo aspect, although your shadow in photo #3...:nonono:

Also, you should consider a reflector of some kind if you're gonna keep a flash mounted on your camera. That way, you get into low-light Hell, you can bounce it rather than blast it. Gives you a more natural look...

Better yet, go off-camera. Numerous ways to do it.

Advice from a photo-J perspective, that's all. Maybe you think I'm crapping on your post. Not the case at all. I simply must offer photography tips to those who demonstrate a skill for it, which you did in photo #6, even though it's soft.

It's a genetic thing. No offense intended.

Carry on. :)

No offense at all...i'm not one that gets offended, just gets revenge :D. When I shoot for things like this I don't really put much effort. put the 5DII on P and let her shoot. When I go out and actually shoot, I go manual of course, unless it's action, then I use shutter priority. I really enjoy shooting night scenes, abstract, landscapes, and macro. anything that isn't people related. though occasionally I do get some good offroad shots. I did 35mm B&W darkroom for a few years about a decade ago, and only switched to digital 3 years ago. I still have a lot to learn about editing and still try to shoot the available light correctly the first time and not rely on any editing. Though to be honest I usually do minor editing to my good stuff.

Up next is the hot head head liner I have sitting in my office, remove the top (install liner) remove doors, install my SpiderWebShade and drive it for a month. When I sell my truck and 4Runner I plan on using that money for AEV lift, wheels, tires, bumpers. Hopefully all at once. Of course minor mods like CB/HAM, small things will come continuously. have some Gorilla Acorn lug nuts on order so I can keep my wheels mine (hopefully). Want some Trek Armor covers soon!

Not going too extreme. Once the lift/wheels/tires/bumpers are done it's mainly complete as far as major mods go. Of course a Jeep is never done, so little things will always be coming and going.

No revenge needed. Just an observation from a guy who's been looking through a viewfinder since he was twelve, and pays his bills that way.

Probably get some flak for it, but it's nice to know you're a Canon guy. :)

Just wrote the email to Mitch for my Black/Black Trek Armors with red stitching. After a full day in the desert I realize the seats absorb a TON of fine dust that really doesn't seem to come out easily. Even with a good shop vac and 150 PSI 19 CFM compressor it just doesn't seem the same as when I bought it So an easy decision to get some seat protection on there.

I'll also likely end up doing what I did on my last DD vehicle and purchasing a spare driver’s seat cushion down the road. Thus when it collapses from me draggin my ass over the bolstering I can replace it and have like new seats.
I'll post up pics of the install.
Coming up May 5th is re-install of the doors and hardtop, along with the HotHead headliner.

Kiddmen57 04-24-2013 07:22 PM

Installed my Gorilla lug nuts this afternoon. Not very impressed. I had the acorn style (one locking per wheel) kit from Quadratec. I'm damn luck I had a 1/2-20 tap in my arsenal. Had 3-4 hard starting and 6 that needed to be re-cut with the tap to even thread on.

Kiddmen57 04-27-2013 09:55 PM

Got a few minutes today to take care of a couple minor mods while the wife and daughter went shopping. First thing I did was order a compact CB radio and all the crap to go with it. Let me just say that I am very annoyed at the lack of mounting options in the '13 JK. The center console is even tinier than previous versions and will just fit a compact unit with not much room to spare. I am also annoyed that no one makes a remote face CB (Don't say get the 75 WX thing, I had one years ago and hated the damn thing. Anyways, all that good stuff is on order.

Next up was installation of my HotHead headliner in preparation for re-installation of the roof (possibly tomorrow). It's getting in the mid 90's here and that's a bit too hot for a 9 month old. Installation went very easy. I had an extra rol of 3M foam adhesive tape that is used for installing side moldings so i beefed up the amount of tape holing it up there. Overkill yes, but that's me. Sorry for cell phone pics, again this was a quick mod.

Finally, I wanted to get rid of that unsightly antenna Jeep provides. I had cut down my truck antenna but it was a different mount. So I cut this one down too. Removed the ball, cut it, ground for ball re-install, added the ball back, and painted it black. I cut it in half exactly. Around 18"

Nice mod to the antenna,
Did the same to my Ram before grabbing an Antenna X one

Looks great! I love the color and the rubi decal!

The Brown Santa dropped off package one of my CB part kit today. The Purple/White/Orange Santa lied about delivering today and is re-scheduled for tomorrow with CB package #2.

Unfortunately I am headed to the dealer first thing saturday to fix a non working power window. Then it's lunch with friends and then on to a afternoon work party. Hopefully I can get some time Sunday between the kids swim lessons and family dinner.

The plan is to run a 4 guage cable under the passenger seat for the CB power (overkill?). Yes it is. But thats not all it will run. I will terminate at a distribution block. Later additions will be an ARB dual compressor, and HAM radio gear under the driver and passenger seats. One cable will be cleaner than multiples. I'll post up pics of progress if any is made.

Just if you were curious, there is a company on the west coast call Strike force zebra, and they made a mount that uses the center footman loop on the windshield to mount the cb to.

Kiddmen57 05-02-2013 11:45 PM

The CB is going in the center console. Eventually I will have a SPOD above the mirror.

CB Install Part 1:

Got home a bit early today so I mounted the Rugged Ridge CB mount. Two things important to know about this mount. Everyone complains that it tilts the antenna, and provides poor ground. Both of these are easily solvable with an angle grinder. I prepped the bracket by grinding off the paint where the bolt heads will contact the bracket and where the stud mount will need contact for ground.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ps17a4da08.jpg

I also ground down the outer portions of the welded holes. This give a bit more play to level the bracket. Hey, use a level....who woulda thunkit? [sarcasm off]

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...psf52421b6.jpg

Then I checked for continuity (ground) to the battery:

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...psdfd348fa.jpg

After confirming continuity I masked and painted the bolt heads and bracket black again.

Next is running the wire. I went with the FireRing FME cable though would recommend Just cutting the end off, running it, and installing a new end per Firestik tech sheet.

Having Grandma (my mom) over proved useful as the FME end wouldnt fit through the nylon sleeve. Cut it off and sewed it back on for a clean install:

Sorry for crummy pic, forgot an after pic. With QD mount but no antenna yet.

Part II will be installation of the CB unit in the center console.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that likes to take apart there brand new jeep. Good looking jeep so far

Kiddmen57 05-05-2013 12:55 PM

CB Install part II:

Had an hour while the wife put the baby down for a nap. Finished running the antenna cable to the center console. Ran an external speaker up to the roll bar, and put a temporary cigarette lighter plug on the CB radio until I do my ARB compressor install and run heavy power from the battery. Didn't take any pics. will add some later as I get the chance.

Kiddmen57 05-05-2013 04:00 PM

CB Install Part III -
Got it all buttoned up with exception of the antenna due tomorrow and SWR calibration.
Used some 2 way foam tape to adhere the bracket to the inside of the console. The CB rests on the bracket but isn't really supported by it. Pics as promised.

CB Antenna

Got my Firefly antenna on today and tuned in. AS expected SWR was not as good as my 4Runner was. 1.5-1.6 on 1 and 40, but 1.1 on 20. I try to stick to 23 so that will be just fine.

Put on the Mopar plastic sill plates. Won't be forging much water in the desert so I didn't seal the body seam underneath them.

Kiddmen57 05-19-2013 10:37 PM

So i had a moment of weakness and impulse bought a DynoMax evolution kit for the jeep. Tonight I wrestled my OE exhaust out from under the vehicle and started to install the dynomax kit. the first pipe did not line up to the hanger. I was quite annoyed until I researched and discovered I had the kit for the 2007-2011 4 door. So hopefully Amazon ships the new kit out of Phoenix like the last on and I have it by Wednesday so I don't have to re-install the OE exhaust for my trip over the holiday weekend. crossing my fingers. Will report back once all done.

Kiddmen57 05-22-2013 04:10 PM

OK. After receiving the correct parts today I ran home at lunch and installed the kit. Took all of 15 minutes to bolt it up. Work to work was 30 minutes total, still had time to go eat!

Maybe I'm just getting older but this thing is LOUD. nice idle, and nice cruising speed (45-55 ~2000 RPM) but getting up to 45 from a stop is obnoxious. I'm going to wait a few weeks to see if it milds out a bit. If not I might add a longer pipe over the axle and out the back to quiet it down some. The real test is drone at freeway speeds. I'll be testing this in the morning on my way to San Diego.

Who at Chrysler thought....lets put this nut on the top side of the clamp with about 2" of clearance.....arrrg
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s03aaf2b5.jpeg

the kit
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s3dfa1b7a.jpeg

looks nice
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s3a0dba9e.jpeg

But hangs down low. No lower than gas tank but I hit that on everything so....
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s9f7fc3ae.jpeg

Kiddmen57 05-28-2013 04:49 PM

So, coming back from SD I was ready to shoot myself with the drone inside the jeep from this exhaust. Way to annoying to let it continue like this. Have an appointment this Saturday to add a pipe to the back of the jeep. Will report back.
