Bestop Bikini ... Help!

3 Attachment(s)
Hey Guys -

Just got the bikini, windjammer, duster combo from bestop.

Everything fits great... Except the bikini around the doors! Why is it so loose and not pulling all the way?

I notice there aren't any of those plastic clips or folded fabric like the factory soft top has.

Something didn't seem right when I was pulling the fabric around the roll bar and Velcro'ing?

Is this the design, or am I missing something?

Any pics you could show me would be REALLY helpful. Please dumb down your answers for me... I'm new at this :)

IMO I would be extremely disappointed...my TJ has the plastic that tucks into the door surrounds....the instructions from Quadratec look like it is a major PIA and doesn't seal the cab like on the old TJs .....sorry about that bad news.

NoCal12 05-12-2013 10:04 PM

I am getting ready to order the combo as well. 2012 JK 2 door. Is there an issue with how the combo fits? Is it the best way to go?

JDsDream 05-12-2013 10:31 PM

Have you tried fitting it without the door surrounds? I admit that I have a TJ, but my Bestop bikini will not fit with the door surrounds installed.

Edit:

I just found this on the Bestop site. It pertains to the bikini for 2007-2013 Wrangler

Notes

This Bikini top attaches to the sports bar - it does not require or attach to door surrounds.
Requires installation of windshield channel #51243, available separately

Is it the cable safari bikini? If so the straps at the rear of the surround go outside the door. I just installed mine, JKU, but found that bit out. However, I do have the cable safari bikini so it might vary on your setup.

Check your part numbers there are 2 for the JK. Not sure this will help .

Their are two different door surrounds and two different tops. If you have a cable system top you need the door surround for a cable top or if you have the older door surround then you need the bikini top that has the plastic strip that clips into that door surround

I was told by quadratec that it is just the way it is. They also told me all the products similar to the bikini fit this way... I wish the top could just fit snugly like the factory soft top.

It just looks sloppy.

When I hop on the highway, wind gets underneath the top and it actually bows up. Very loud and looks silly.

Also, because it doesn't fit right, I get rain puddles on the top, and when I put the car in drive, water comes flowing in.

Unfortunately I threw away the boxes so it looks like I'm stuck with this thing.

That what was happening to me but I had the top for 07-09 and I have a 2010. Are you sure you got the right top?

BLK2012 05-13-2013 07:51 AM

I had one of these for the '08, and it fit like a glove.

Call Bestop directly, they'll help out.

Circa1973 05-13-2013 07:53 AM

I have same top and it is doing the same thing op's is doing. It serves its purpose, but looks very tacky.

I don't understand what would have changed. You can't pull it tighter on the sound bar?

Some decent pictures might help...

Circa1973 05-21-2013 09:27 AM

Its pulled tight all the way around. Just near the doors flaps.

Morris4x4Center 05-21-2013 09:38 AM

Looks like you didn't clip it into the door surround.

Circa1973 05-21-2013 09:45 AM

Kit came with a bag of clips, but directions didn't specify were to install them.

I too have the same cable bikini I just put on my 13 JKU. A couple questions, are you getting big puddles in front and in rear of sound bar? Also, I can see the J hook straps from above as well as the clips that the soft top brackets clip into (although the soft top is obviously off). When dry out I get no flapping but some lift. I can not get the cable any tighter and it sits outside the door surrounds and inside the drip rail. Is this correct and are you getting the same large puddling?

NoCal12 06-07-2013 08:02 PM

Ok. I am confused. I just bought the Bestop Bikini top for a '12 JK 2dr which OE is a soft top. I bought the 52593 wind channel that you attach the bikini to after installing the wind channel. I am told I should have bought the 51243 that comes with the Bikini already attached to the wind channel. This is because my jeep has door surrounds since it originally came with a soft top.

Anyone have any thougths? Does this thing fit properly. I sure see a number of poor reviews.

Can you tell me where you ordered your Windjammer & Duster from? I haven't had much luck finding one for a 2013 along with the tailgate bar. Thanks.

NoCal12 06-07-2013 08:59 PM

Morris 4X4. They posted just above.

The bestop bikini top I bought fits a lot tighter than the pic you showed. Mine fits fine without the door surrounds. It when going over 60 mph with it lifts up.
Mine has about 3 miles on it, I don't have the recite or I would take it back. The top was $119.00 and the head rail was $ 53.00.
Before anyone buys one like this maybe you would like to buy mine for a 1/3 the price. This is the one I have

During a rain storm I one day I had two big puddles between the header and sound bar and between the sound bar and roll bar. When I drive, with the windows open I do get some lift but it doesn't really flap unless the wind pressure changes. To really crank down on the cable straps I used a pair of vice grips, two small pieces of hard cardboard to protect the straps on either side, and that gave me enough leverage to pull tight. You are correct having it inside the drip rail but outside the door surround at the rear.

I, too, bought the exact same top as mcgee10, and I can't go more than about 30 mph without lots of flapping. It drives me crazy! I threw away the box as well. I am trying to think of a way to just have it cover the front seats rather than the back. I have a two door 2012 rubicon, and I live in Texas (just for reference).

I had those tops on my jeep before I got the full soft top. The Bikini top is not designed to have doors surrounds on. There should be Velcro straps to attach to the roll bar above driver and passengers head. Then I just pulled it tight back on the roll bar and pulled the straps tight. Sorry I don't have any pics with mine on. Basically the look you have is right. Take the door surround off and pull it tight to roll bar. This top is not meant to keep all water out. It will drip in when it rains some, not much. When parked the water will pool on the top and on the tonno cover. My tonno cover never leaked. I had mine tops on for about 2 months, mostly it got wet on the floor boards at drivers and passengers feet.

I have the duster, tonno and bikini I took off my 14 for sale. Never sold to any one out of town so not sure how to go about it. I used it about 2 months. with both bars, header and tail gate.

I stopped a lot of the flapping by taking some towels and jamming them between the roll bar and cover. It just kind of helped tighten it some.
I also found an couple of plastic sticks (like the ones you might see at the end of a driveway with red reflector on it) and made an X from the header bar to the roll bar, with the center of the X kind of over the center arm rest. Then I folded a few micro fiber towels and stuck them between the plastic sticks and the fabric. That made it so it didn't pool on top.

Bencalexander 09-29-2014 10:00 PM

Uhmmmm I have this same setup and mine fits great. I have my hardtop on now but I'll dig around to see if I can find some pics. I'm guessing you have the wrong top for the door surrounds you have. The bikini fits loose like that if you're not running the surrounds, however you have the surrounds and it should fit tight.

odd42 09-29-2014 10:30 PM

I have the same but for JKU. If I tighten it up from the back, where it attaches to to the angled part of the rear roll bars, it takes out all the wrinkles and can get pretty tight...

Stfuz 11-26-2014 06:19 PM

Just got the same cable bikini and put it on yesterday. Drove it around and it "puffs" up at highway speeds. I cinched it down pretty tight where it connects with the cable and it is snug every where except over the door surrounds. Wish there was a way to grommet it and spider ball it over the door surrounds. I was afraid of the pooling issue. Oh, and mine is the one with the built in windshield header that just screws down where the hooks for the soft top clip in to.
