TJ Custom Fiberglass Sub Box Build!

5 Attachment(s)
Hey guys and girls!

I have done a quite a few sub boxes for jeep tjs but alot of them were with deep/shallow 10's and shallow 12's. I had a friend at work that had purchased a deep 12 and asked if i could make it work. Challenge Excepted!!!

Lets get to the fun stuff!!!

This is the first preview/test fit.

Stretching fabric and trimming it up.
Attachment 236396

I had to cut out the back of the sub box and add a second ring towards the bottom of the sub so that the magnet can fit, sense its a deep 12.
Attachment 236397

Fiberglass resin added to the fabric. So i have a hard surface to add the fiberglass too.

Fiberglassing!!!!

Ok, the Resins dry!!! I sand down some of the edges. When i got to put the fiberglass on them it will be able to grab to them easier.

Normally when i do fiberglass on sub boxes i get questions on layers and how many. Ill do about 2 to 3 layers depending on the size of the sub and how much preasures i think will be. (Sub size mostly)

Ill will update a lil later...

Sanding/filler

In between each time that i fiberglass i sand each layer to try to get the high spots down and it help to aloow the next layer of fiberglass to grab to last layer.

After sanding my last last layer down to pretty smooth look/ feel. Ill go back and add bondo to it. It looks like alot but once its done being sanded there wont be much left on there!

Here are a few shots of how the back came out after sanding it down

Attachment 236486

After everythings sanded down depending on where im at with how it looks ill throw some primer on it to hand sand and see where my high and low spots are at.

Once im happy ill put a coat a primer on it that helps the rhino line stick to the fiberglass. Then i will go in and cut the ring out with a router and cut the wire connecter hole out in the back too.

I normaly try to do one last test fit before i have it Professionaly rhino lined.

Thank you sir!!! I posted this a few days ago and started to wonder. If anyone liked them or the idea. Thanks for your comment!

joebarlow65 04-18-2013 08:22 AM

Yea i think it has more to do with the fact that so many people end up making half assed MDF/fiberglass monstrosities to fit inside the factory console that people just got tired of reading about them, and your title makes i seem like its just one of those. IDK what your day job is but these boxes look 100% professionally built, and the chrome jeep logo is a very nice touch. what kind of rhino lining is that? looks like its a pearl or something.

colburna13 04-18-2013 08:32 AM

I wish I knew about this before I got my sub...

bcasey 04-18-2013 12:22 PM

Very cool Sir.......

GoldenSahara00 04-18-2013 11:09 PM

Nice work again.

TFBlackout05 04-19-2013 01:55 PM

Thanks guys! Appreciate the comments! The Rhino line is a "Hybrid" It's a Gloss paint/ Rhinoline/ undercoat. The guy I go to has his own patten on it. It s really nice stuff!!!!

Looks awesome man. Nice quality work and nothing smells better than a good fiberglass job :whistling: Makes me want to build something in my heep now. I had two 15"s, two 6x9"s, two 6 1/2" components, and two 4x6"s in my last YJ. But that was when I was in highschool, no wife, no backseat, no house payment etc. and building boxes was my day job. Now I have a "real" job :nonono: Are you in Coweta county GA? If so, I'd love to see the finish of the rhino liner in person.

Aseawood 04-27-2013 07:41 PM

Looks great!

RevCo666 04-27-2013 07:51 PM

What would you charge someone to make the first fiberglass sub box in your posts? I know quality when I see it, just curious what your time/material would run someone if they asked you to make it? PS great stuff you got going man!!

tjtime 04-28-2013 12:01 PM

That one was for a my buddy that's in the Marines. I cut him quite a deal but I normally charge between $250 to $350. The single 12" sub had to be modified from a normal box because It wasn't a shallow sub! Since it was a full magnet prof sub. It was about $350. It just really depends on how much Fiberglass work is needed! That's how I debate the price. Because there is a lot of sanding.

TFBlackout05 04-29-2013 09:22 AM

Thanks for all the compliments guys!
