Wheel shipping
So, who has shipped a set of five steel rims and how much did you pay? My son-in-law found me a new set of rims in Texas super cheap and my daughter took them to UPS today and they died to charge her $378.00. That just doesn't seem kosher to me. I've shipped a single rim before for about $35 so it doesn't make sense. If I can't find a better way they'll just sit there until Christmas.

I know for a fact that the major tire and wheel retailers get substantial discounts on shipping. Anyone shipping major volume gets big discounts from the major carriers based on how much volume they ship. Remember also that the UPS store is a franchise.

I followed this guide - The Definitive Guide to Selling, Packaging & Shipping Your Wheels, Rims and Tires and the price I paid was 200-220 cheaper than anywhere else. The how to ship wheels team does some volume and can get pretty impressive pricing.

so if a single rim was $35... then 5 wheels would be $175 leving about $200 left on the total shipping quote you got..and i would bet those 5 tires weigh more then those 5 wheels...
Tires weigh roughly 50 # each +/- depending on size...

i know it's not "an answer" for you but it might be some perspective..

i actually tried to work a deal on wheels and tires with a guy from Texas, but i'm in Jersey and the shipping killed it.

I ended up getting wheels and tires from a guy in West Virginia... we agreed to meet in PA to make the deal work.... I drove about 220 miles, he drove about 120 miles... it was a RIDE, 3 1/2 hours out, pick up, and 3 1/2 hours back...It cost me about $80 in fuel (and a steak for my brother...he took the trip with me) but it was much cheaper then shipping...

I shipped 5 procomp 15's in their own boxes for $125
They were alloys so weight wasn't much. Maybe 20 lbs each.

UPS stores kill you on shipping it seems... I try to stay away from them

I took the weight and measurments my daughter got at the UPS store and determined they could go by mail for and $150 to me. Each wheel is 36 pounds. But, I'll be up in Missouri for a month and a shop there will accept delivery from a shop they went to in Texas. The guy in Texas is cutting us a deal since he works on my son-in-law's jeep and the shop in Missouri gets the install job for letting me ship there. I may go ahead and upsize the tires as well but we'll see, I still have to plan for the furlough since there is no official word yet.
