Dash rattle

Bought my Jeep last week. Previous owner had a key fob wedged between the gauge cluster and the center radio console. I asked what that was for she said that the dash rattles something fierce if removed. She had a shop check it out and they couldn't find the cause. Looked online and found a thread on another forum of a TJ owner who took his dash completely apart to find that there were two nuts missing from the four vertical dash bolts. He found that he didn't have to take the dash apart as the bolts were located just under the defroster grille. I checked mine and lo and behold, mine were missing too! 65 cents later, no more dash rattle! If your dash rattles, check these bolts!

Nice find, thanks for that insight! My previous TJ developed a fierce dash rattle which took me too long to find... it was from a broken spot weld on the firewall that held the nut the radiator support rod bolted to.

What broke the spot weld? The weight of the Hi-Lift jack I used to carry that was supported by the radiator support rods.

yes, yes!! I as well have a rattle and pics of this location would be helpful.

When I wheel my TJ even through gravel out in the country, my whole dash will shake and rattle almost violently. Not sure if this would be the same problem you are having but pictures and maybe a little more detail would really help us and me!

So the screws are just located under the defroster vent?

mrobinso 04-17-2013 02:29 PM

I am checking this tonight. I have had a terrible rattle in my dash and I am crossing my fingers this is the cause.

Angus Brown 04-17-2013 03:34 PM

Lol, good to know this isn't must my problem either. I'm pulling that defrost vent cover when I get home this evening. Someone has already been in my dash, I bet they didn't put the two nuts back on. Please post pictures Scootsk, and thanks for the info!

No one has been in my dash but they were missing.

Here's some pics. The grille can be pulled up by hand. As you can see they are right next to the defroster vent.

Do you mind sharing what size nuts you bought/used?

InvisiblePants 04-18-2013 12:38 AM

I had a rattle in my dash as well. Turned out to be .39 cents in changes, 3 pencils and a pen and a misc nail.

I believe I used m6 nuts and split lock washers.

Where? I tried the OPs fix and found I had a missing screw but over near the driver side window. Popped a new screw in there but the rattle persists. Was the stuff in your glove box or somewhere else?

Angus Brown 04-18-2013 08:02 AM

Yep, they are M6 nuts, and there are four of them. My center two were missing as well. I bought the nuts, plus a rubber washer that I put between the firewall and dash mounting tab, then another one between the tab and the new nuts. My two studs that had missing nuts were corroded all the way down the threads, so someone either took them off a long time ago, or the factory never installed them in the first place. Haven't had a chance to drive the Jeep to see if that fixed it, but it locked down my dash pretty well compared to what it was like before. Good find.

I was also missing the two screws that secure the bottom plastic dash piece right below the steering column (someone took my dash apart, probably to install a CB from the looks of it). Your center bezel, the thing that surrounds the center vents/radio/heater controls may be loose as well. Mine was missing a clip that someone broke off, and it was part of the rattle source. I took it off and fan some foam tape around the edge, where it contacts the dash, and that fixed one of the rattles. HTH

Did the rattle go away?

SHADYDC 04-18-2013 02:10 PM

i used a lil piece of wood wrapped w/. black tape in my ex's jeep becuase hers did same thing but it wasnt missing screws. mine does it very slightly when road gets rough, plan on looking this weekend ill check these screws first

OhSixTJ 04-18-2013 06:12 PM

Mine were missing. M6 did the trick! Associate at Home Depot gave them to me because they weren't in a package. Dash is solid now.

Not sure yet, haven't had a chance to drive her again. From the before and after thumping I did on the dash, it seems to have removed the rattle.

DermJeep 07-10-2013 08:36 PM

This was a huge help, nice find. My recently acquired '02 TJ had all the problems described above, including a fierce rattle in the dash bezel.

Scootsk 07-12-2013 04:11 AM

PO brought the Jeep to the dealer and they couldn't find it. Surprised there was never a TSB issued. Seems like a pretty common problem.
