Thinking about PAINTING my GRILL and...

So I am thinking about painting my grill black and also the top section of the hood.

If any of you have done this lets see some pictures. Thanks for reading!

Im going to be doing my grill matte black (now its the chrome) but waiting until i get my new wheels & lift. Got some suggestions from another forum as to what i needed to do.

Is the hood paint or decal? I'm wanting to eventually do the same thing with mine but with a thin red pinstripe along the outside of the black (I have a white TJ).

This is what i was advised...get a can of PlastiDip and spray down the grill. Just make sure to clean it really well before you spray it. It's completely temporary and it has a matte finish. Look it up on YouTube or on here to see how easy it can be. Otherwise if you wanted more permanent than temporary, then get self etching primer or scuff with scotchbride pads and some rattle cans of matte black. You can try following up with some matte clear coat to help seal it and protect it.

FYI, unless you completely strip the chrome off nothing will permanently adhere to it.

Gotcha...whats the best way to strip that off then? Being plastic?

There isnt really. Ive pulled it off before with a single edged razor blade and pliers but its a pain.

Should I pull the grill off or just mask really well? I think sanding it would be much easier if I took it off...

I just masked everything off.
As for the chrome, once upon a time I built a couple of sport trucks and when I would color match the grills I would use a razor to make a small cut for a starting point and then take it to the car wash and blast off the rest with the high pressure water. All you need is a spot to allow the water to get under the chrome and it will just flake off from there. Hope this makes sense.

I will post pics later, i have a tj and taped off the raised part of the hood and painted it flat black. it took a few beers and viola it was done. i made sure to use two good coats of primer. i also lightly sanded the area to help the paint stick better. i masked the area off and sprayed away with rattle can. it has been over a year to date and still holding good. i live in ohio so its subject to the best of weather here. lol. i am painting the grill once it warms up a bit. the best way to paint plastic is scuff it up with sand paper and use spray cans designed for plastic.

That is just a chrome overlay. It should be held by clips in the grille opening. You should be able to just pull it off.

That would be awesome then! I'll look into it later then. These mods are much easier to make a decision on vs picking out a lift. Thats for dang sure
