4.88?

I have a 97 TJ with a 4 banger so i have 4.11 gearing. What i want to do is go with 4.88 to get my speed back with my 33's. I have a buddy with a set of 4.88 gears for the rear but not thr front. So my question is would it be ok to run 4.11's in the front and 4.88 in the back? Also in the front i have a detroit trutrac but not the rear. So my other question is would it be ok to run the detroit in the front without having a rear?

You can run the different gearsets as long as you don't want to ever use 4x4. Running different gearsets will eventually (sooner than later) start destroying expensive drivetrain components in four wheel drive... You need to have the same gearset at both ends. As for the locker, you can run just a front locker if you want to. Lots of guys are doing that.

I, personally, would never run 2 seperate gear sets. I don't like the thought of my aluminum case running 2 seperate speeds. If you do gear the rear at least pull the front drive shaft so it isn't rotating and there is no chance someone can pull your 4wd and tear it up :)

Alright thanks guy's i just got done ordering my front 4.88's i REALLY cant afford or want to hurt any of my 4x4 stuff up front. Just the word "destroying" sound expensive. lol.

wow..4:88s with 33s. Guess just cuz i have a 4.0 that sounds god awful low. Im runing 36's and im debating changing to 4:56 or 4:88. Was leaning towards 4:56 cuz i want the top end speed to stay up in the 75mph range or so. Im running 3:73s now and can still burn the tires off from a stand still, but i cant hold fifth gear on hills is the only problem. Guess im goin to have to find people with the setup im looking at to find out. And the guys are right, different gear ratios are only good for diff size tires front to rear. Mainly only ones who do this are the mud dragsters with paddle tires. As far as the locker goes, running one in the front or rear makes no difference.

4.88's with 33"s is the stock RPM/speed ratio for 4 cylinder Jeeps (factory was 28" tires with 4.10's). With 35"s you're supposed to run 5.13s :D

These little guys don't mind high rpms for long times - in fact they need it to do good on the highway.

amen! my 4-banger loves to run between 3500-4000 on the open road!

4.88 is just about perfect for a 4-banger running 33" tires. Too low of a ratio for a 4.0L with 33" but just right for the 2.5L. :)
