hood paint

i have a 97' wrangler. i'm the only owner. decided to invest in the jeep some and repaint because of the cracking paint on the hood. come to find that there are 4 layers of paint on the hood. possibly the cause for the cracking, from what i've been told by the body shops.
is it normal, from the factory, to have that many layers of paint?

From the factory there should only be a sealer, base then the clear. If there is four different layers of base and clear then its been refinished, not to say it wasnt done after it rolled of the assembly line though. Ive painted thousands of " Brand new cars" the dealer doesnt have to state if its been freight damaged or lot damaged if the repair is under a set amount. Jeep hoods are notorious for getting crows feet. Mine is the same. Im not sure if its in correlation with underhood temps or what.

And how are you able to tell there are four separate " layers"

i had one paint shop tell me he's only seen cracks like that when there are mutiple layers of paint. thought he was crazy, since i've never had body work done. and the guy doing the repaint had to sand it down to the metal. 4 layers was his estimate of what he saw.
disappointing, poor workmanhip. coating on side mirrors flaked off within couple years.

I have checkers or crows feet all over my hood. This is my 1st TJ that didn't have the heat shield underneath. I wonder if that could be the issue?

Well mine is a virgin, the hood hasnt been painted and its got crows feet. Too much material at one time could cause it.

I have a 97 with crows feet on the hood. I was told that was the clear coat and that it can be buffed out. Don't know if true or not.

I'm thinking about putting a poison spyder louver on my hood.

Thats a negative ghost rider. Crows feet are small fractures in the paint "Splits" if you follow.

Mine along with many TJ's I have ran into have the same problem. Mine is only noticeable up close so for now, it's staying the same.
