I just got back from Autozone where I had the guy use the obd machine and here were the results..P1698 Definition: ECM fault-No CCD message from TCM/Explanantion: Failed ECM/Proable Causes: 1. Open CCD bus line 2. Failed TCM...I possibly understand that ECM=control module...the rest might as well be in Chinese....any help or solutions would be greatly appreciated!!

You could have gotten the codes yourself, there is no need for an external OBD reader for most model year TJs. Simply turn your ignition key on-off-on three times within five seconds and then wait after leaving the key in the On position. In several seconds, have patience, any stored codes will begin displaying in your odometer.
That P1698 is actually saying it's not getting expected results back from your transmission. What model year TJ do you have and what transmission?

Thank goodness it's you...you are in my eyes the "GURU"..I have a 2004 Sport 3spd auto w/OD..I did the key thing but the explanation I got was a mess...almost 3 paragraphs from a thing I got on google...I am not sure the trans part number but the above is all I have...I can go outside and look if there is a place I can get it...I do have 3.73 gears if that helps...thanks!!

In addition...I had a mechanic at work look over the wiring and he said that everything was connected and did not notice anything out of the ordinary...but, he also said that the wire/s could be bad on the inside...I am used to working on my '78 Chevy truck and not all of the electronic stuff.

How's your tranny? Is it shifting normally and can you tell if the lock-up torque converter is locking up once you get to a cruising speed? Once the torque converter locks up, the engine rpms will drop a tad but don't confuse it with the OD kicking in.
this is what happens...when I try to accelerate to highway speed the tranny will "catch" as well as I can define it...like bam!! several times until it gets into high gear...then when I got to stop at a light @ exactly 30mph the tranny will shift down hard...jerking me forward...

at normal crusing speed it is great...if I try to accelerate when it kicks into OD the trans will "grab" bam then it works itself out...

I was also told that the solenoidsx4 should be replaced...but when I called the dealership (they only carry the parts)..the service tech said "I have no idea what you are talking about"...they told me the part I needed was the TCC...$165...non returnable..another tech said that my throttle control P something or other was bad...and here I am...DOH!!

One technique MIGHT help determine if it is TPS (throttle position sensor) related. Work the accelerator pedal linkage on the throttle body 50-75 times by hand. You can do it rapidly, just open and close the throttle repeatedly which also works the electrical contact inside the TPS back and forth. If it's dirty inside and causing an eratic signal, this operation might help temporarily. If the symptoms change at all after this, it may indeed be something as simple as the TPS.
A bad TPS can cause wierd problems, that is for sure. I'll add this... that while the above technique MAY help to diagnose the problem by seeing if the symptom changes by doing this to the TPS, a bad TPS isn't guaranteed to respond to this. But it could help since the TPS does get dirty inside and this cycling of it may just help.
If not, then it's time to look more closely at the transmission. Incidentally, the TPS is what tells the computer where the accelerator pedal is. If it reports back in an eratic manner, like if it were dirty inside, you'll get eratic throttle response which could affect how smoothly the tranny shifts.
The TPS is controlled by the same shaft that the throttle is connected to that controls the butterfly valve at the top of the throttle body. The below shows exactly where the TPS is.

Without driving it it's impossible to say. Do cycle the linkage as described though, it may help to isolate the issue to the TPS if indeed that's the problem and cycling it clears the problem. Good luck. :)

i was wondering if this could be an issue...the throttle cable is about a quarter inch longer that the mount...see pic...could this be a problem??
No joy on the quick fix..but I did drive around the neighborhood and noticed that if I accelerate normally/slowly that when the trans shifts up that there is no problem...but if I press on the accelerator and make the trans go into OD that is when the bam/quick shift happens...also the slowdown is normal until the trans goes into low gear to stop...:confused:

So, what about the TCM?? ECM?? or could it be the TCC?? that attatches to the valve body of the trans?? That is what my fixit guy suggested...I really do appreciate your time in this matter!!

ok..after a little research this is what I got, unless I get a DRBIII, which is a MINT!! per the error code I might have to take this in to the dealer...:banghead:..i read the manual and if I had that dam machine I could probably fix this....:banghead:

I am currently having a similar problem. The diference is that my 2004 Wrangler 4.0L Auto stays in 3rd gear and the OD button does not work after the jerking happens at higher speeds. Then I get the Check engine with the 1698 code. What did you end up finding for the fix.
