Correct Speedo Gear

1 Attachment(s)
Attachment 239683

1998 Sahara

3.73 Axle Ratio
175MM Rear Axle(D35)

2" Lift
Running 245/75R17 BFG A/T
Overall diameter = 31.6"

What correct speedo gear should I go with? One for a 31" tire or a 32"?
(It's the wife's, never seen the dirt/not going to, hence the 17"s)
Thanks for the help!

Are you certain the speedometer is incorrect? I ask, because I'm running 32" tires on mine with 3.73's, 5sp., and my speedometer is dead on with the stock speedo gear.

If it were my wife, I'd put one in that made her think she was going faster than she really is. So I'd go with a 31T that is for 33" and 3.73. :)

X2
I used to run 32's on my 3 speed auto with stock gearing (3.07's).

I was going to change the speedo gear but checked the speedo with a GPS and couldn't tell the difference.

Check this thread for more information.

Edit to add: misread your original question, but figured I'd leave this up here anyway just in case. :)

The correct tooth count is 32 for a 32" tire & 3.73. That your tire is 31.6 is right in the ballpark of a typical 32" tire so 32" is the right tire size to use when looking at a speedometer gear chart like the one at Changing Your Jeep Speedometer Gear. Click on that site's chart to make it big enough to read.

This is correct. Tires almost never measure their advertised size. Some brands are worse than others

I just purchased the speedohealer. much easier to use and you can change it anytime you want.

How many speedo gears do you plan on installing on your Jeep to get your return on investment?

Patrick H 04-22-2013 07:37 PM

I've never used a speedo healer, but it's gotta be pretty easy to be easier than swapping the gear..;)

The PO of my Jeep put 31's on it (it came with 30's) and knowing what I know about him, he may very well have changed the gear to match the 31's, so I can't be absolutely certain I still have the original gear.

It takes about 3 minutes to change a speedo taking your time. Not worth the cost to me.

All gears have the tooth count stamped on them. 1/2" wrench, pull it out and take a look. For a 30" tire it would be a 34T gear.

That's what I'm saying. I know how long it takes to swap the gear. Now I'm curious about mine, so I think I'll check it .

I had to go to a Speedo Healer when I put in the Mega Short SYE. After having it, and finding out how simple it is to program and reprogram, I really like it.

Jwolfer 04-22-2013 07:56 PM

I wish I could just get a gear. Since mine is a Rubi I have to get the speedo healer.
