Pinion gear
Just got my jeep tranny rebuilt and they said the front pinion gears had play in them... What can I do about that? Gears are new ground for me

Sounds like time for a overhaul.

Ya that's what I am afraid of. There is a quarter turn worth of play in it

jeepwayoflife 04-24-2013 09:38 AM

Yeah that's too much play. There is supposed to be some play (backlash) but not 1/4 of a turn worth of play. How many miles on the jeep?

The front axle's pinion shaft via the driveshaft has a full quarter-turn of slop? Are you certain about that amount? Some "slop" (actually called backlash) is required but 90 degrees of slop is way beyond acceptable. The amount of normal backlash is alarming to most people, can you verify the pinion shaft via the front driveshaft really has that much (90 degrees) of rotational backlash/slop?

166,000 on the jeep but it has a locker. I jacked the jeep up and got the front tires off the ground. When I move the wheels there might be a half inch worth of travel before the yoke moves so I am think that most of the play I'd from the locker maybe?

Jerry Bransford 04-24-2013 02:50 PM

If your front axle truly has a locker in it (it would have to be aftermarket), then that locker combined with the ring & pinion gear's normal slop (backlash) would combine to make for a lot of rotational play for the pinion shaft. More than many would expect.

Looks like the pinion bearing is bad how hard is that to change?

If your not experienced and do not have the tools to replace it have it done by a professional. It's not just a remove and replace like a lot of parts are.

Turned out to be outer bearing and was not that bad to change. Got it back up and running again. Thanks for the help
