OK so I've been searching high and low for the last few months to find a Jeep in good condition that I can afford. I found a 2000 TJ, 2.5 / 5sp, 104K, black, soft top, 4" rough country lift, some body lift (not sure how much), 33" tires that need replaced, stock gears, axles. The PO doesn't know if it has a SYE or not, he says it has no driveline vibration, rolls down the road smooth.

It's in very good condition...Recent paint job (professionally done), tub is lined, no floorpan rust, frame looks almost perfect. No mechanical issues to speak of and no leaks. PO last fall drove it from Missouri to New Mexico and back..From the looks of things it doesn't appear to have been abused or even wheeled that much. The paint job was supposedly just to freshen it up, paint was faded and had normal wear and tear.

I have not seen it yet, but he's sent me a ton of pictures...

My concerns:
1. I don't know how well it's been maintained...It's had 7 owners in its lifetime.
2. I've read many threads talking about advantages and disadvantages of the 4 banger.

To be perfectly honest guys, I'm not much of a "wheeler", I don't really have anything close (within 1 hr) to me where I can "legally" off-road. Pretty much I just want something I can take the top off and cruise around town in with my kids. This is probably all I'll ever do, so should I really be concerned with power? This won't be my daily driver and probably won't even hit the hi-way all that often.

I just know that of all the Jeeps I've looked at, this is by far the cleanest one I've seen...He wants $7000. Everything I've seen (KBB, Black Book) says he's priced about right for the condition it's in. I've spoken to my neighbor who is a car dealer and he says it's a good price...

The 1 million dollar question....What do you guys think?

The 2.5 is a good engine. If you're not on the highway much and just want to cruise it will get the job done. Offroad it can go just like any other Jeep. As for that particular Jeep, it looks clean but you need to definitely check it out in person to see what kind of lift it has and if it was done correctly, how it drives, hear it run etc. Also 33s will slow you down quite a bit but shouldn't be much of an issue on the stock Dana 35 (if that's the rear axle it has) if you're not going to wheel it.

Thank you...Is there anything specifically I should look for to see if the lift is done correctly? I'm not sure if I would know if it was done correctly or not?

With him having a 4" lift on the rig, you can easily check and see if he had a SYE installed, which should be. In the picture below, you will be looking at the transfer case and you want to see that extra little bit of extension mounted onto the case itself. It will be right where the driveshaft goes into the transfer case. If you see this mounted onto the TC, then he had a SYE installed. Sort of scary though that he doesn't even know if he did this or not with a 4" lift. Makes you wonder if the angles are even all correct after he did the lift. If you have pics. to post of the undercarriage, we can get a better idea.

It doesn't have an SYE, but swears there is no driveline issues. He drove it from KC to New Mexico and said it rides like a dream.

So is there anything else that could have been done to make the driveline right without a SYE with a 4" lift. He said a mechanic owned it before him...
