Looking for a small trail

Hey all, just got back into the jeep world and looking for a smaller trail to take my daughters, aged 4 & 9, for their first experience in the northern va area. I'm in leesburg and hoping to travel no more than 2hrs for a day.

I used to hit taskers gap, however, would prefer a smaller trail since my younger one is not all that adventurous (yet).

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Flag pole is a pretty tame trail, and can be done in a couple hours if you're just riding. I take my 4 year old son with me on Flagpole, only one I'll take him on for now. Flagpole is in Harrisonburg though

Leesburg? Me too.

Were going to Flagpole and elsewhere this Saturday. I'm taking my 9 and 10 year old. You should join us, there are only a couple technical spots on Flagpole. Most is a nice ridgeline drive. Set the Flagpole thread if you're interested.

Shot, I would love to hit the flagpole this weekend, unfortunately, my yard is calling my name.

Thanks to both of you for the input, I'll keep you advised when I do go and maybe we could go together.

danrb 04-26-2013 04:32 PM

Too bad. My daughter loves it when other girls her age go.

Definitely google Dick Myers Jeep Jam, register and go! Very family friendly!

Turbostixxx, wouldn't you know it, I have plans the first week of June too!

Danrb, how was it the weekend? Looks like you had great weather!

cbrosnan 05-01-2013 10:11 PM

Hello All. I'm brand new to the Jeep thing, having picked up my Jeep about two weeks ago. I'm in Leesburg, as well and would be interested in tagging along for an easy first time trail ride. I'm sure my 6, 10, and 12 year olds would love to go as well. Keep me in the loop should you head up to Flagpole.

It was great weather and a beautiful day. Only issue was the trail was real dusty.

Looks like we have a Leesburg crowd! This is great, my kids enjoy going on the trail when there are other kids. We should plan a trip soon.

Definitely should plan a trip soon. I'll check to see what weekend we have free in the neat future and let you guys know, hopefully, we can come up with at least one day we can all do!

How about the 25th of May? We can go somewhere simple or somewhere complex. Places I've been are:

Peter's Mill Run - very easy trail
Flagpole - Easy Trail, with two technical challenges.
Rausch Creek - As hard as you want it. The Green trails are harder than the two above.

I'll be camping shoe creek the 26th and doing the trail from the bottom on the 27th

Peter's Mill Run, isn't that close to Taskers Gap? Around Woodstock?

May 25th may work for us, trying to confirm now!

Cbrosnan, does that date work for you? If we start this really easy trail, I think it would be a great way to get the kids excited!

I want to try shoe creek. Seen a number of videos. However, looking to go jeeping with others that bring their kids along. Last couple trips have all been adults, and my kids enjoy it more when their are other kids. I did after all get a jeep for my children.

Petter's mill is close to Taskers Gap. It's right outside Edinburg VA off 81. It's the closest off road park I've found yet. Nice easy drive, lots of places to stop and eat lunch. Here is a video of the last trip.

Great video, love the music. I've never seen such a clean jeep after 4 wheelin' ;0). Looks like the trail was dry that day.

We're up for the 25th! Not sure whether it will be just my nine year old daughter and me or the whole family, but definitely tat least the two of us! I just watched a video with my girls of a four wheelin' trip from 1998 in my '97 TJ to get the 5 year old excited, didn't work, but I still have nearly 3 weeks.

Cbrosnan, think you guys can make it too?

Dan, we've got a lot in common, jeeps, beer, coffee, wine and most importantly, our children!

Reaper2332 05-05-2013 11:19 AM

I was gonna plan a trip for the 25th, but wasnt sure where to go. I was thinking raush creek but its memorial day weekend so I figured they would be packed. I'm down with trying out shoe creek, I've never been.

Oh man it's a blast, shoot me a PM, you can come camp with everyone in the 26th and trail ride the 27th

Bring your daughter and wife. We'll make an easy Peter's mill run drive. I promise better coffee this time.

Sounds good. We'll make a picnic of it. Both my 9 and 10 year old are a captive audience, so they'll be along. I'll plan on bringing coffee. I roast my own coffee and have been making it via chemex brewing lately which should work for the trail.

You brew your own beer by any chance? I need to brew some soon, been a few months.

I'm itching for something more challenging. Thays why I was thinking rausch again, but with it being memorial day weekend and them being busy I'm thinking shoe creek is on my list.

You roast your own coffee? Wow! I used to grind my own coffee ;0), that was until I found coffee people's jet fuel k-cups and bought a kuerig. Can't wait to try some "home roasted" coffee, I didn't have that even when I was in El Salvador!

Considered brewing murph own beer many times, the closest I ever got was a Mr. Beer kit in the 90's, wasn't bad but for the time it took I believe I could have done better. Had a really hard time after I came back from Germany being able to drink any bottled beer, man, I miss dominion brewery! Right now my beer of choice is Sierra Nevada Torpedo, love a hoppy beer! I don't really have the space to do any home brewing, but if you're looking for someone to brew with, I may be able to find some space!

What time you thinking about heading out on the 25th? I live in Prospect Hills (kitty korner from Loudoun County High School)' so we start from here or meet somewhere. Excited as a kid, I've missed having a jeep and the freedom of being on a trail with nothing above me but sky!

danrb 05-06-2013 06:27 PM

I've had my kids up at 4:30AM for a trip, to Rausch creek. It's about 1.5 hours to the trail, so what time are you comfortable with? We usually head out between 7 and 8 AM.

cbrosnan 05-09-2013 06:18 PM

I can't make the 25th. My daughter has a soccer tournament Memorial Day weekend.

This will probably a common theme for me for the next few weekends, but things should free up a bit come mid June.

Reaper2332 05-10-2013 06:09 AM

Anybody want to do a trip up to Raush Creek on the 18th?

Maybe. I took too many rock and stump hits last time. Wanted to have a lift before I go again.

We're early risers, however, since I'm still trying to convince my younger one to go, let's head out at 8:00!
