Anyone getting close to 21MPG on the highway as Jeep claims?

I have a 2013 Rubicon Unlimited and I'm not getting close to this. I live in the Bay Are in Northern Ca. I drive with cruise control on around 65mph and I average 14.5. The Jeep is stock.

yep. 21.7 as of this morning with about 220 on the trip meter this tank. I drive from 7600 feet to about 5000 feet & back daily. 56 mile round trip +/-

Usually around 70 mph or so on the freeway, 35-50 mph on the mountain for 10 miles or so

dawhitesJKU 04-26-2013 11:49 AM

i got a 2012 4dr w/ 3.21 gears. I only hit 21mpg once or twice on my stock 16 steelies/29 tires. i'm at 19+ with 33's.

HOOCBB 04-26-2013 11:54 AM

In my 2009 2dr, if I don't drive it like I stole it and stay at or under 65 MPH on the highway, I can get 20 MPG from a tank. That's roughly 75/25 hwy/city.

I have the 4.10 and track it with a app. The best ive got is 16.2. keep in mind the rating on the sticker is model wide, not model specific. So a sport with the 3.21 could see this but you will never see this with a rubi.

I also found the evic MPG to not even be close. After the last wheeling trip mine said 13.7. I filled up as soon as we were done. drove a full tank and evic then said 17.2. doing the math for that tank i got 15.5 mpg. so tell me how I could go from 13.7 to 17.2.. I have never reset the evic MPG since I bought the jeep.

Matador 04-26-2013 11:57 AM

We took at drive out to Rausch this past weekend, 200 mile drive. I averaged 19.20mpg and I'm in a 2door Rubicon with 4.1, 35" Duratracs and 2" lift. My everyday driving is a mix of highway/city and I only get 15mpg.

termite 04-26-2013 12:01 PM

Keep in mind that the MPG numbers Jeep claims is likely based on a base model with 3.21 gears and the base 16" wheels.

However the first few months I had my JK Unlimited Sahara w/ 3.73 gears, I could regularly get 20MPG on the highway and 18 mixed. Now with mods and heavy tires I get more like 17 highway and oddly 16 city.

DozerJK 04-26-2013 12:02 PM

I have a '12 JK manual -- If I just drive to work and back (all highway; 36 miles each way) I will almost always get at least 20/21mpg... As soon as I start driving back roads and hitting lights it goes down to around 17/18mpg...

Also dont go off your cluster gauge, thats not accurate at all.

legitposter 04-26-2013 12:07 PM

'13 JKU (3.73, auto, 285/70/17): 20.3 as of this morning. This jeep does lots of highway driving and I'm veeerrry light on the gas pedal.

'13 JK (3.73, stick, 255/75/17): 21.4 as of this morning. This jeep does almost all city driving.

I have a 13 JKU Sahara- 3.21 gears.. averaged 21.5 from SC to DC and Back.. Mainly highway and some stopping in traffic. The math was spot on with my hand calcs as well..

enjerhoo 04-26-2013 12:14 PM

^^ ditto on the math vs. EVIC as long as you do not reset in the middle of the tank without compensating in the calc.

TigheK 04-26-2013 12:16 PM

Stock 2012 JKR with 3.73 gears and 32's. I see 20+ on occasion when I stick to secondary roads and keep the speed consistent around 55MPH. Beyond that, roughly 19MPG at 70MPH.

xcoaste 04-26-2013 12:19 PM

'13 JKU Sport S with 3.73 and hard top. I only have 2k miles and 1 highway trip. On that trip I had saw 20 round trip up and down PA mountains. I am seeing 17 around town.

reddragons 04-26-2013 12:19 PM

Thanks for the clarification. I'm taking my first big trip in a month and will have to see what I get in the mountains.

Abnormal-JK 04-26-2013 12:43 PM

'12 JK Sport, 3.8 VVT, 6 spd man, 3.21, 255/75/17 Wranglers (soon to be 285/70/17 Dura's)

At 2000 miles 16.5, at 6200 miles 18.5 average. Mid-grade fuel. Have hit 21 on highway only driving. I do notice the better the gas, the better the mileage, have not calculated the cost benefit of premium fuel.

JGreer 04-26-2013 12:48 PM

Not even close... Then again I have a 3" lift heavy bumper and larger tires... Even when she was stock (for about a week) I never saw over 16MPG. I have a '13 JK auto 3.73 gears.

yup. I got 16 so that's closer to 21 than it is to 1.

anonymous6915 04-26-2013 01:22 PM

pfft...you guys and your penstars...i have the crappy 3.8 and on the same trip as Matador, i got about 22 mpg and i have the 4 door...o and i have the crappy 3.21 gears and a 2" lift with 35's....maybe it was because i have the manual transmission...

Reynoldsmao1 04-26-2013 01:32 PM

4 door, 3.6, manual, 3.73, BFG MT.

I get over 20 if highway driving. I have noticed mileage gets worse if going more than 70 or using the cruise control.

bartlanz 04-26-2013 01:41 PM

My 2012 2 door JK S Package with 3.21 with 12000 miles on it gets 22.5-23.9 according to the LOM rite now... a few months ago on winter fuel it was getting more like 19.5-20.5.

I am selling it and have a Rubi on order... I am wondering what the milage change will be between the two... 4.10's vs 3.21's...

dshortone 04-26-2013 01:42 PM

On my stock 2012 JKU Sahara w/ 32" tires (not sure on the gear ratio), I average around 19 with my commute. If I don't go out for lunch, I can usually get it around 19.5-19.9. I travel 70 miles RT each workday, and over 95% of that is on the freeway.

Duckquackers 04-26-2013 01:43 PM

I'm sure he meant 12... Damn them fat fingers..

DarthGromit 04-26-2013 01:47 PM

2010 stock sport 2 dr, and i average around 20-21 mpg most days during the week. hot dogging it around in the boonies on weekends i get less, but them im driving aggressively so i wouldn't expect it to sip gas.

Ive also noticed when i take the top down, mpg at highway speeds suffers; all the extra air drag i guess. below 55 the top up or down doesn't matter.

legitposter 04-26-2013 02:34 PM

To the OP.. How new is your jeep? I got terrible mileage, around 14mpg, when it was brand new. I'm now at 2400 miles and getting the over 20mpg reading.

basecamper 04-26-2013 02:36 PM

21 mpg in my Jeep :rofl::rofl: 16 on a good day! Having said that its still an awesome vehicle and my favorite to drive hands down!

Spence30 04-26-2013 02:40 PM

I'm at 17.9 average 2011 stock (hopefully not for much longer) 4 door and I am happy as hell I thought it was going to be closer to 13-14. My old TJ with 33's was around 10.

mike1158 04-26-2013 02:48 PM

2013 Sahara 2 dr. auto 3.73s.. I have seen tank avarages around 20.4
I do a mix of 10-20 mile highway runs and what i'd call back roads..not really much "city" driving. I do about 500 miles/ week.
i have no lift, running Grabber AT2s 275/65-18 same diameter as stock , more tread and about 2# heavier / tire.
I will same that the harder of faster i push..75-80 i see a drop. Thats just aerodynamics.

groovebus 04-26-2013 02:53 PM

My 2013 JKU with Stock 17" wheels, 32's and 3.21 gearing gets about 16 around town and I had it almost to 20 on a trip to NV. I usually set the cruise just a hair of 65mph.

And in perfect situation with high quality gas, not the corn substitutes.

I'm averaging 17.5 mixed on 3.73 auto, no mod that can affect gas mileage. I guess I don't belong to this thread :hide:

Can one of you guys teach me the art mpg? Can't crack 18 driving as I do on 99% highway drives
