How much movement should there be on the pinion shaft? Is it ok that it moves any at all? Should it move in and out any? I have a little play in mine up and down and moves a little in and out is this normal?

There should be *zero* lateral or longitudinal play.

So what could be causing the play? Gears look good.

Could be bad pinion bearings, or the pinion nut may just be loose. They don't usually loosen up unless there has been work done on the rear end (pinion seal replacement, etc.) or the bearings are bad.

This is the front pinion. Bearing should have not play in it at all right? How bad is it to change? This one has play in the bearing.

Replacing a pinion bear bearing is not difficult but neither is it an easy job. You would need a bearing puller and press, and you'd have to mostly disassemble the axle by sliding the axle shafts out & removing the carrier to get at the pinion gear. Then you'd have to know how to arrive at the proper shim thickness via a little math so the pinion gear would be at the correct depth again after pressing the new bearing onto it.

If you have access to a bearing puller & press, it's not a difficult job but it's not one that many Jeepers here would be up to.

What, exactly, did you do to solve the problem?
