Shifter Boot Binds Shifting

I recently bought a 98 4.0 Sport and the top shifter boot on the console was torn so I replaced it. The problem is that when I shift to 2nd or 4th, the boot binds against the backside of the console and it's difficult to keep the shifter from popping out of gear. The boot, retainer and mounting slots only allow the assembly to be installed one way, so I am.........puzzled.

Do you have a body lift, or transfer case skid drop installed?
Likely the reason for the shifter hitting the console.
You can move the console back, or heat and bend your shifter slightly.
After I removed my tcase drop, my shifter lined up nicely again.

Thanks for the input Shark, I'll snoop around. I don't know if my TJ has a lift, or if it's factory. Previous owner said he hadn't had it lifted. Like you, I'm inclined to heat/bend the shifter.

Flip it around 180 degrees. I took mine off an had the same problem. Till I turned it around. It does make a difference.

If you have a foam tube around your shift lever under the boot, take it off and try it without it.

What's that suppose to do?

On mine after the lift and the tc drop, the foam piece ate up the clearance between the shift lever and the boot and bound up against the inside of the boot. Once removed it allowed the shift lever to move further back.

Mine would bind after the body lift. I took the screws out of the console and moved it back a 1/4"

Same here, the leather boot upgrade was great.
