Offroading
 
I've driven automatics my whole life and recently bought my yj and I have no idea how to offroad in a manual, any tips?

find a local off road club and hook up with them, they can show you lots. The will also let you know some trails that would be perfect for you to go out and have some fun while you learn. Have a great time

Keep your foot off the clutch. Start with moderate trails and wheel with at least one other rig. Makes the trip more fun and safe. If you have any technical questions, feel free to ask. Very helpful group on here.

I've driven both autos and manuals offroad and one big difference is how you use your brake/tranny. Going down hills, for instance, keep it in lower gear and let the tranny slow you down ... using the brake will only lock up your wheels and you'll loose some control. With an automatic, unless you put it in D1, you'd want to use your e-brake, but carefully. I much prefer riding using a manual tranny. If you have to start it going uphill, don't use the clutch, keep it in first and just turn it over. The rest you'll pick up as you go.

Stick beats out Autos all day long. My buddy has a real hard time keeping traction with an automatic when I am using 4x4 Low with a stick. Only time they can get real tricky is when you are on a hill you couldnt make it to the top of. In those situations a lot of the time it is just having the guts to completely let go of the brakes and let it creep back in 4x4 low. I will never own an automatic. Standards are the best.

One thing to master is the tactical use of the emergency brake. Seems I always end up somehow having the group stop and I am on the hil. Mine is adjusted great and I use it regularly. Takeoff in 4L is awesome but can be a little challenging in 4H. But it is something you will need to check. Other than that you will get used to it quickly. It is a fun drive and has some advantages and when you select 4H or 4L you won't grind it in like an auto.
