Cross Country??
 
Anyone ever driven their Wrangler across the country? Not on a sight seeing trip, more like going to get to the other side, type driving. Tips, pointers, pros, cons, etc,.

Tip: Many extra jerry cans :) (but I'll admit I haven't done yet.)

I've done it a handful of times on a bicycle. You should be able to accomplish it in a Jeep.

Don't drive tired... and especially where there aren't rumble strips. If you haven't fallen asleep at the wheel before, you seriously don't know how easy it is to do.

I'd also make sure to have extra gas for the wrangler.

I drove from CA to MO. No different than any other vehicle. Except for when driving on a 2 lane highway you'll learn to ride as close to the white line as possible when passing semis. Hood flutters like crazy. Expecially if it's windy.

Like n00g7 said, don't drive tired. If you start swerving all over the road you could roll. Don't rush, take it easy and enjoy the trip. I know you can make good time at night, but you miss out on the experience. Have fun.

I just got back from a trip from MI to south Texas in my 4 door. My son who is a traveling RN drove fron Tampa to Seattle then on to San Antonio for jobs, carrying all his belongings in a 2 door. The only tip I can think of is to pack knowing you may need to access the jack on a bright summer afternoon.

And enjoy the ride.

Thanks everyone. I have made a number of +/- 500mi (north south) trips but this would be the first time going east/west.

RevCo - I have been thinking about jerry cans. Though I be traveling along I40, I hope that fuel won't be an issue.

Fill up on gas when you can. If you're at 1/2 tank and come up on gas stations, top it off.

I've driven CA-WI 8 or so times in a BMW which gets much better gas mileage than the jeep. Never have I ever wished I didn't top off the tank. 1/4 tank goes VERY quick uphill in the mountains, so I'd hunt before then in the jeep if you're coming up on any elevation.

I usually start early 6-8am and drive til 4 or 5pm, take a quick nap, have a coffee or something then drive til 10-11pm and go to sleep. I just sleep in the car, so I make sure not to pack too much stuff behind the driver's seat. Usually wake up at 5am or so when it gets light and then do the same thing.

I highly recommend against anything but coffee to keep you awake. And if you do want something else, drink 1/2 a 5-hour energy at a time. You still want to be able to take a nap every 6-7 hours of driving.

I drove once from Northern Ontario to Calgary Alberta, tho it wasn't in a jeep BUT we made lots of stops and that trip took about 3 days. On the way back I was solo, slept in the car for a few hours(if you can next to a Semi) and drove back home in 18 hours. Not something I would do again. So if you go a partner, great if not don't take the stupid road lol and take your time.

On my long trips I do just the opposite. I drive at night and when the sun is coming up I find somewhere to eat, then I find a Motel and sleep till about
5pm, get something to eat and hit the road again. I prefer driving at night, less traffic.

Too many critters around at night, IMO. Literally see hundreds of deer on the side of the road in SD, no way I want to deck one at 80.

I'm not doing 80 in my Jeep. I guess it depends on what part of the Country you're in. I'm driving East Coast down 95. North Jersey to the Fla Keys. To me, night time is the right time.

I will be traveling during the day for the most part. I should be able to handle 14 hrs at a time with few stops tossed in. I don't have any reason to push it so I won't. I plan to pack food and water for the trek and try to enjoy it. Most likely will spend one night in a hotel on the way out and one on the way back. With rest-stop sleep for the other 2 nights. Still planning it out. Trying not to spend a fortune.

Don't make an hourly target per day, just drive when you're not tired and when you're tired, stop for a quick nap. It'll go faster than you think. When I've tried to push it by driving too long in one stint, it took longer because I needed to sleep much longer. Cat naps are the way to go. Also, wear sunscreen even if you don't need it to prevent sun burn, too much sun will make you super tired.

Drove in a 2-door with the wife and kiddo from Texas to South Carolina over a two day period. Then back a couple of days later. Not to bad..... 2000 miles round trip.

Got my first taste of serious hood flutter today! That is some freaky stuff. May be acquiring new hood latches when I get to AZ.

Pick up some plastic ties and use it on the hood attachment that way if your not sure the stock setup will hold up, atleast you'll have extra security. Just keep a knife handy if you need to take them off.

Northern Michigan to Mid Florida this spring in my Wife's 4 door....great trip, I would do it in a heart beat in my 2 door soft top, 6 speed. just not as much storage space.
