What is this?

I'm assuming it's for a factory soft top, but I'm not entirely sure. I've got a Bestop soft top and a factory hard top. As far as I can tell, these aren't really serving a purpose?

Roll bar by the sound pod by the looks of it.
Not sure what it is though.....

Diverdown87 04-29-2013 02:19 PM

Never seen anything like it on my 98 and I have owned it since brand new. How about a better picture from more of a distance.

Neil F. 04-29-2013 02:55 PM

That did not come from the factory.

It's towards the front of the roll bars, closest to the windshield. Here's a couple further shots:

(Pardon the pale hand. Not enough sun yet here in Chicago.) :D

Kota7x 04-29-2013 04:20 PM

It looks like part of an aftermarket door surround to me.

Rayko 04-29-2013 04:33 PM

Some kind of homemade mirror relocation bracket? Is there one on the passenger side too?

ChaddG 04-29-2013 04:34 PM

Do you have half doors or full doors? I have never seen one of those, my guess is it helps support the soft top as well. I have full doors and door surrounds. < peices that go around the top of the door and the back side of them> for those who don't know, it gives the door something to close against also gives the side windows somewhere to clip into. I have full doors and the surrounds have 2 screws on each side, with a large circle handle on them.

Jeffreybomb 04-29-2013 05:24 PM

I've got full doors. It was really nice out today, so I took advantage of it and swapped out the hard top for the soft top. I also popped the doors off and went for a drive, so I'll take a look and see if it does anything for the doors that I'm not noticing. I don't think it does.

As far as I could tell, everything on the Jeep was stock when I bought it. I'm kind of surprised it's stumped everyone; the way it's bolted in makes it look like it's actually part of the stock bars.

Jeffreybomb 05-01-2013 12:12 PM

Took a closer look: these things don't touch the full doors when they're closed. I seriously have no idea what these things could be.

Madden 05-01-2013 12:41 PM

Could be for a bikini top or something similar

SinfulDragon 05-01-2013 12:55 PM

1 - How do door surrounds fit with that?
2 - Its a hat rack. I looked 3 solid times, no doubt in my mind that its for holding your hat. Or in an EMERGENCY situation, should no one be around to help, it could be a stand in for the "Hold my beer and watch this"

SecretAgentMan 05-01-2013 12:58 PM

Rotate it 90 degrees if you want to flip someone off . . . :hide:

:D

thats awesome. I like that idea.:punk:

TJDave 05-01-2013 02:49 PM

Maybe it's a pivot point for some kind of flip back top??

I've never seen one so I really have no clue.

I like the hat rack idea though.

Hardermods 05-01-2013 07:34 PM

It USED to be a kickstand, but yours is broken! :banghead:

Or

I have no clue.

DONT TOUCH IT!!! Its a critical part of your airbag system called the wireless roll bar momentum exchange meter. It detects the deflection of the roll bars in a crash and could deploy the airbag.

HAH! Like those would exist on a TJ.

Exactly! Whatever you do...don't bump it!:whistling:

Marcwakefield22 05-01-2013 08:57 PM

Take a hammer to it and see if it really does deploy the air bag ;)

Damn! I'm lucky I didn't drop the roll bars on the ground when I popped 'em off to lower the windshield! That would've sucked!

;)

YES YOU ARE! It would have sucked! Lucky SOB! :thumb:

ThatWhiteMachine101 05-02-2013 02:09 PM

I think it's a tie down anchor for a roof rack of some kind. That's what it looks like to me.

?????? That piece would be inside the top (hard/soft) when it is on

Wordgie 05-02-2013 03:05 PM

It adds significant gains in HP and MPG and renders your axles unbreakable under the weight of up to 54" tires. Not to mention chicks dig it.

Got a pic or name of the soft top?

I know some aftermarket tops have a different surround than the factory. If it has the flip top feature it could be the locking point for that.

n00g7 05-02-2013 03:08 PM

Looks like it's in the hole you'll need to attach the door surrounds... If it doesn't keep your beer cold, toss it.

But I think the guy above is correct re your soft top.

mikemounlio 05-02-2013 04:42 PM

looks like a tie down point for a custom sun top.

Or they really wanted to hid the NOS button. DAMN CHEATERS

Jeffreybomb 05-06-2013 02:08 PM

They're held in on the bottom with axel hat nuts, which is why I thought it would be a stock part. The mystery continues!

Dtwitch19 05-06-2013 02:32 PM

I have the same thing on my 04 Sahara. Where is Jerry? I'm curious as what these things are.
