transmission question

I'm looking at a 1980 CJ. The CJ has a rebuilt 6 cylinder. All together, between the original engine and rebuilt engine it has 61K miles.
The transmission was rebuilt and has 9K miles.

When I took it for a test drive, it was really hard to get it in first gear. It was fine when driving, and the gears didn't grind. When I managed to shift into first it would drive fine.
In order to put it on first a lot of times I had to put it in reverse and move it to first.

It was such a PITA that I went on second a few times.

2nd, 3rd, 4th and reverse worked fine.

4h, N, L was also a PITA, but I am not planning on taking that Jeep offroading.

Do you have an idea of what could be the cause of the problem?

How did the clutch feel? Being that it was rebuilt i feel like it may be something other than the tranny. I'm no expert on Jeep Transmissions unfortunately only Celica Trannys (be thankful you dont have one).

The clutch felt really nice.

I never had a car long enough to need a new clutch, so how is it supposed to feel if its a clutch issue?

If the T/C was a PITA too..... I would pass unless you are getting a GOOD price.

I have the same setup in an 82.... NO issues......

Factor in The gear lube

What gear lube are be in the gear box? Go the GL4.. Not GL 5 as the syncro's do not like the really slick stuff. All boxes are different :doh:some will work with anything :thumb:. others need "tuning"

I dont know what the current owner is using, but I am not going to buy it and hope it is an easy fix.

I told the owner to check that, and if that fixes the problem, then i will pay for it and get the jeep.

Thanks for the help.

I actually have no idea how the clutch is supposed to feel because I don't have a manual CJ. I was just wondering if it grabbed well or if the pedal was spongy. And most definitely don't settle on one, especially since it is getting warmer out. People bring them out and try to sell them now.
