Family Off-Roading?

We took our new JKUR out into the mountains this past Saturday and noticed that very few (if any) of the other Jeeps up there where families. We’ve got three kids, ages 3 to 11, and are looking for some other families to hit the trails with. While what the other Jeeps were doing looked like a lot of fun, my crew is not quite up to the higher speeds and bigger holes just yet.

Anyone else in the Family Group?

This doesn't help you yet, but I'm in the process of selling my TJ so I can get a JKu so we can do family wheeling also. Our son is to young (2 months old) right now to go up, so probably won't be until next season before we get out. I also have an older son, 11 this summer, that comes out for the summers.

I'm with you on this. When I have my daughter (11) with me in the Jeep, she is enjoying the fact that the doors are off the rig and that whole experience rather than some serious wheeling. We just take it easy and do mountain trails that are enjoyable rather than serious obstacle trails. I tend to do that stuff on my own when she isn't around since the slow speeds and not going anywhere fast really doesn't make it enjoyable for her....lol Granted, she gets a kick out of it but I know she would rather have some wind blowing through the cab and seeing some nice drop-offs.

I am always wheeling with the family, with my 2 and 4 year old I'll do harder trails. But with my wife and baby we do easier trails. Its really nice to wheel with others that have kids. Slower pace and the kids enjoy having other kids around. we are always looking for jeeping families.

Thanks for the replies guys.

jagerhelix, where in CO are you?

How old was your baby when you started taking him/her up?

jagerhelix 04-30-2013 01:28 PM

Oberst, I'm in the springs.
Jason, took my littlest one for the first time last weekend. He is four months old. with him, everything is very slow. I didn't hit harder trails with my middle boy until he was about two.

I have three kids as well, 13 10 and 3 its usually the 3y/o that is the most excited to go play in the mud. The group i go with usually has the kids with them and we do bbq and have the 4wheelers and stuff out as well. Find a great group and enjoy, with the 4 doors it is a million times easier to allow everyone a little Jeep love.

I'm looking to get out with the family on Sunday day trips. My kids (6 & 11) do sports all day Saturday. I'm in Parker.

Oberst Hajj 04-30-2013 02:20 PM

jagerhelix, we live in the Springs as well. We’ll have to meet up sometime and introduce the families… maybe grab ice cream and talk about a family outing.

Gellato, Sundays are pretty open for us. The girls (9 & 11) are with their dad every other weekend. Parker is not too far off, my youngest step-daughter does Karate tourneys up there during the summer months. If you guys plan an outing, let us know and we’ll do the same.

Gellato 04-30-2013 02:52 PM

Sounds good.

Oberst Hajj 04-30-2013 02:59 PM

Gellato, boys, girls, or mixed?

Gellato 04-30-2013 03:17 PM

PM sent.

I've got a 6yr old girl and want to get her out on the trails also. i would love to hook up with some family jeepers. i'm from parker. i've got a 2012 JK Rubicon

Gellato 04-30-2013 03:45 PM

Great! I'm rolling in an Orange 2006 Rubi.
Looks like Rampart seasonal gates might open soon.

Nice easy trail with connections to medium difficulty trails. Forest Service also might open the lower section (fire closure) in June so you can take the scenic route to Co. Springs.

i'm a newbie to wheeling. only been out twice so far. so most likely i would be following people until i get to know the trails. i went with a big group down to moab hill. i liked that one because you could avoid most of the challenging obstacles if you didin't want to do them. plus there was a great mix of newbies and experienced wheelers.

Codysrubicon 04-30-2013 06:47 PM

I know one trail our family will do every year is tincup pass. We like to take our flat lander family members up to mirror lake and eat at frenchees restaurant in tincup. It's actually a good mix of easy to medium trails and between fishing and sightseeing you can make a day of it.

So I am new to wheeling. Me, the one posting is actually 15 and me and my dad are working on building up our 92 yj. We went pretty big on the project but as far as wheeling experience we haven't done much in the past few years. We have only taken trails capable by our Yukon Denali and our excursion recently. There is a pretty Big mod list on our yj. With a few more to come. Any ideas on some good trails to get a feel for some people looking on getting into some harder stuff. We are in pueblo and I know most of you guys are up in denver and the sorts. Mostly it would probably be my dad me (15) and my little brother (12).

Sounds good man. I'm actually thinking of doing another light/scenic run on Sunday with the family. Not sure where yet though.

BrianTG 05-01-2013 12:41 AM

Would you mind if I tagged along with the wife?

By all means. I'll try to come up with something solid by tomorrow as kind of a family run.

BrianTG 05-01-2013 01:14 AM

Well I'm by no means in. Still gotta talk her into it.

Let me know. Sunday day trips are the best day for us.

Oberst Hajj 05-01-2013 09:22 AM

We might be up for something on Sunday as well. Our family got some very bad news yesterday, so we'll just have to see how everyone is feeling in a few days.

But we really want to get out there with other families. I was actually looking to plan a trip for Sunday the 19th. Do 3-4 of easy trails on a loop from Castle Rock to either Monument or Woodland Park (if the Parker/Denver groups were up for that distance), all off of Rampart Range Rd.

jagerhelix 05-02-2013 06:28 PM

Wife is taking care of a few things Sunday so her and the baby will not be attending, but I'll be running China Wall with either both of my boys (2 1/2 and 4 1/2), or my older boy and a neighbor friend (5). It's a a pretty fun trail with bypasses for all obstacles but one, but is still passable with a stock jeep without difficulty.

Definitely interested in some family runs as well. Daughter is 9, twin boys are almost 7. They all love being out in the Jeep, and more kids just adds to it. I'm in Springs, have been lurking in WF for 6 months but just registered. Saturdays are currently busy with soccer but that'll be over soon, and when school's out we'll be up for weekday runs as well. Looking forward to joining on some group runs. Missed the big group to Illinois Gulch a few weeks back but went the day after. Loved Moab Hill!

Oberst Hajj 05-05-2013 08:08 AM

Welcome to the little Family Group Josh.

thetrifakta 06-02-2013 12:22 AM

I would love to join you guys on a family run! I have a 6 (soon to be 7) year old boy and my "lady friend" has two girls 10 (going on 16 haha) and an 8 y.o.

I just went from a TJ to a JKU and am stock, Well I'm on 33's... That's just above stock right? Anyway, schedules can be hectic but I def would like to join in if possible.

Thanks
Thomas

Welcome to our little group Thomas! Sounds like our kids line up age wise pretty well. My 11 year old stepdaughter is going on 18 :( My 9.5 year old stepdaughter is a tom boy. We also have a son that just turned 3. He's a huge gear head already!
