Jeep wont start in parking lot..

Sitting in a parking lot after running an errand, the jeep wont make one engine noise. The radio and all dash lights come on but car wont start. Whats the problem?

start with checking your battery connections..

thgr8alex 04-30-2013 02:05 PM

I did. Battery is connected. And like i said the radio and all come on when i try to start

Any clicking at all when you turn the key to try and start the engine, or nothing??

thgr8alex 04-30-2013 02:28 PM

Didnt do a thing, figured it was starter and a tow truck came and tapped the starter with a crow bar so i drove it to an autoshop for a new starter

thgr8alex 04-30-2013 02:30 PM

Thanks for the quick responses though!

May be just a bad solenoid on the starter, which would be nice.

Well find out soon!

It's more than likely the relay or starter. My bet is the relay. I have replaced two of them over the past ten years

Was there any preventative thing i could have done so i didnt just go dead in a parking lot? Or is that just how you figure it out? When it quits working.. haha

If it is the starter there's nothing you could do to prevent it, that's not "going dead". And if it was the starter you should always try tapping it with a wrench or something while someone turns the switch before you ever call a tow truck, wow. If it just started doing that you could have driven like that for months before the starter really needed rebuilt. I use to have to do the starter tap on mine , got away away with it for six months before it finally had to be rebuilt.

Well the tow truck was basically a friend and didnt charge. I didnt know the tapping trick until now but i drive a lot by myself so if it happened while i was out alone then i may be in trouble lol so i find its better just to get a new one

You're better to get a new one anyway. The tapping trick is great...but it's only a band-aid. It might work for years, it might only work once....not worth the risk. Glad you got it all figured out. Out of 3 starters i've had fail in various cars, they've all started with the hammer trick :o) I even did it in the jeep with a d-ring, lacking a hammer available. Now you know the trick for next time...

thgr8alex 04-30-2013 05:42 PM

Got it fixed and its back on the road! It was the starter and now i know the trick! Thanks for all the help and the less than 5 min replies while im stranded in parking lot. Love this forum

Cool. We have a local shop that will totally rebuild your starter for $35 if you carry it in $50 if they have to take it off. With rates like that, no need to ever buy a new one.
