Yup, what you are wanting is a Locker or Limited Slip Differential. Variety of makes, models, and brands for almost every axle in existence.

And to answer your other question. 2 wheels turning is better.

Anyone using the Aussie Lockers on that site? I havent found anything for that good of a price. I might look into these sometime in the future.

You can't beat the price, and they hold up extremely well. A friend of mine has been using them for the past 3 yrs. without any problems. He has also wheeled all over CO, UT, and TX. They work flawlessly.

Hey vector how does it handle on the steet. How's the handling and corners? What exactly does it do in the rain? Is it practicle as an every day driver. I drive 30 miles to work everyday and am wondering should i lock front and rear or just get a winch? Should i even lock and dana 30/35? Are things more prone to breaking? thanks....

I dont know much about lockers. But will it just lock them while in 4hi and 4lo or are they locked into 4 wheel drive all the time. I know in 2wd both my back wheels spin and right now I have open diffs so its no good when I get stuck. So is there anything special id have to do if these are installed to get all wheels spinning?

I drive it every day of the week.. the front aussie is invisable on the street just a very faint clicking while turning.

the rear is a Dana 44 and with the aussie there is a slight learning curve ... theres a slight pull to one side or the other when releasing the clutch, and when shifting.. but nothing you dont get used too..

in the rain I havent noticed any difference .. if anything at all its more predictable than when i was open in the rear..

I dont think I would lock a D35 rear... but definatly do the front

I do know the lockers were a vast improvement in 4 wheeling..

the obstacles i used to have to power thru or over with alot of wheel speed, now i can just crawl over..

its amazing where you can go when all the wheels are pulling instead of just 1 front and 1 rear

Im not in any danger if i just lock the front am i? Why is a dana 30 better to lock than a dana 35? Should i go with at least a limited slip in the rear or leave it open?

is it cause the dana 35 is weaker?? does a stock tj have open diffs or what????

Im pretty sure my TJ is still stock and it has open diffs thats why im looking into these lockers.

The D-35 is the weakest link, and can be broken with stock tires. However, I have also seen people run 35" tires on them, with lockers, and a deep V-Klune underdrive, and finally break an axle after 3 yrs. of wheeling. I think a lot of it has to do with how hard you wheel it.

To answer your other question, yes, most stock Jeeps have open diffs. The ones that come with the D-44 rear, usually have limited slip, with the exception of the Rubicons, which have selectable air lockers.

Yup, what vikng said. If you are only going to run 31 or 32" tires then locking up your D35 can be doable. Just watch your wheel spin and hopping with it. There are a lot of people that wheel the 35 without breaking it, but odds are you are going to want to move up to 33's, 35's etc... at some point in time and that's where the breakage really starts to exponential increase the chances.

I think that someone else also said that the front locker is barely noticeable which is very true. The only time the front locker is going to engage itself if when there is power being put to it. Not just when it's free spinning while you are in 2wd. It has something like 18 degrees of rotation before it locks itself up and same with the rear aussie/lockrite etc....

Two types of lockers:

Full time and selectable:

The full time ones are on all the time 2wd 4wd etc...

the selects are on only when you push a button or the like.

For the most part a full time locker in the front axle will be un-noticeable 99% of the time. In the rear, it will sometimes let you know its there.

Thus just find one that fits your budget and if your have the know how install it, if not have a 4x4 shop do it. Cost ranges from $200 up $800 per locker and figure say another 200-300 for the install. and you might as well change gears while your in there.. so add in another 500 for gears.

Well i dont think im gonna change gears with 31inch tires. I dont plan on going any bigger than that. Now that we have said not to lock up the D35 rear, what should i throw in the front? Is an Aussie the best, what about lock-rite? Or power-tracs hows that? I dont want to break the bank when i can get a winch for less money!

hey WR@NGLER00 although the dana 35 is weak i think it will hold up with lockers if your just runnin' 31's...you just start worryin at 33's and bigger

well i dont think the size of tire has anything to do with it. From what i have gathered its about how hard to spin those tires. When i used to have a truck it was almost the same principal with wheel hop and having leaf springs. Thats why we ran track bars in the rear. Wheel hop is not a big deal until you start smoking your tires and raggin it out, then axle-wrap becomes an issue!!! Thanks for all the advice now just gotta find someone who has the aussie in stock. I have checked several places and they are on back order. If anyone has anything on this let me know. thanks

Nope.. I have see them break right in front of me with 31's and a lock right. the best cure is to upgrad the shaft from 27 to 30 splines, this helps and should be good upto 35's if you go easy on the gas.

Ok well can i put a dana 44 in a dana 35 tube? I didnt think this was possibe. I hope im saying this right. Can i just take out my dana 35 axle shafts and slide in 44's?

sorry, my bad...i don't know about sliding in 44 axle shafts but you can get an 8.8 for cheap and a dana 44 for cheap but if you wanna keep the same axle you can get the superior dana 35 kit...it upgrades the 27 spline shafts to 30 spline shafts which is the same as a dana 44

Nope.. will not fit.. you need a whole new axle housing..

They have a lot of new parts besides axles, but it should give you an idea as to what it will cost.. then you can compare to other shops.

Hi all... I just joined the forum so as to learn some technical stuff from the experts.

I would like to put lockers on my jeep. How do I know which differentials I have front and rear?

I'm leaning towards Detroit rear, ARB air locker front.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

do you want to know what axles you have front and rear? you will have a dana 30 up front and look on the rear differential and if you have a black solid rubber drain plug then you have a dana 35 and if you have a metal drain plug with a square shaped hole then you have a dana 44

ok... drain plug in rear is solid black. What do you think about adding the Detroit locker?
