Moony's "Project Puddles"

Hey guys and gals! Ive been on JF for a while and I feel you dont get recognized as much so I'm starting over! Heres some info on my past.. Ive owned 2 grand cherokees, one was a 1996 laredo and it was perfect. It was simple, had a good motor and it went many places that I was surprised with. I ended up finding a stock 2000 WJ on craigslist with high miles on craigslist for 3300, so I sold my ZJ for 3600 and bought the WJ and it really all started there. I went in head first with this one, long arm lift, 35's front and rear bumpers with homemade sliders, winch, yada yada. Well, the practical person in me decided driving it daily to work was not the best thing to do so I sold it to my parents and bought a kia (I know). Luckily my brother got it for a christmas present and his 16th birthday so its still in the family, but after 6 months I couldnt stand being in a car anymore. On the whim one day after work I stopped by a Jeep dealership and traded up to this 08 Sahara JKU w/ 18k miles. Pristine condition, woman owned before so I knew it was in good hands before.

Swiftly got into the swing of things. Found a cheap set of Smittybilt rock sliders for 250 bucks, which are normally 500? It was my first mod so I was proud to get the main parts out of the way. Luckily around that time I had my tax returns so I ordered a 2.5" Dual Sport XT w/ bilsteins and also got 15x8 Level 8 black trackers and 35" KM2s. Also trimmed the bumper too cause I had to pretty much.

http://i577.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps21dbbc2f.jpg

Also had a chance to take the top off on a 55 degree day! ;)

http://i577.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps74fd1c3c.jpg

Did the mesh grille mod (one of my subtle favorites)

http://i577.photobucket.com/albums/s...psd1540d9b.jpg

I also trimmed the flares and it turned out awesome! Until the 5-0 got me 3 days after I cut them. Oh well, it was cool while it lasted!

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/m...psee3c4dfb.jpg

So I had to get legal flares. Bushwackers it was!

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps51ddce78.jpg

I added a rear LED in the rear flares to match the front, looks more fitting now

After that I bought a Cobra WX ST Handheld CB w/ 4' Firestik on the hood. I actually love having everything in one hand and mounting space is limited in JK's Ive learned.

MoonyJohn 04-30-2013 11:17 PM

Since then Ive wheeled it a couple times. I went on with a few handfuls of guys from here and it was a blast! Everything is tight, sound, cb works, tires grip very well, and for being open it really wasnt all that bad! The wheelbase isnt an issue either being that Im used to being in a WJ which is like a boat haha. Heres some pictures from then.

Thats pretty much it! Next up will probably be a matching spare lol

MoonyJohn 05-01-2013 11:39 PM

Well I guess this is a matching spare update.. ;)

Swapped a buddy of mine's rubi's for my wheels and tires. I traded because they are skinnier and they help keep the law off my back, being that I went to court today to wave the citation for tires past the fenders. These now are perfectly flush with the flares, and they are with spacers. Ill more than likely get better pictures tomorrow. Cell phone pictures are lame

Thanks man :)

It's a place called browns camp in oregon, usually the only place I go. I wish there was more rock crawling though, everything is kind of a drive out.

Looks nice. Gotta love what the 5.0 thinks is a good use of their time. There has to be something more productive they can be doing besides looking for tires sticking out too far.

Agreed, but I got my citation waved so woohoo! I love the look of the rubis on 35's. Its also with 1 1/2" spacers if I didnt mention that earlier.

Heres better pictures of them, and my dog. Shes, the best

I think I need new balljoints, im getting a wobble thats not death wobble but it starts at about 40 mph. Could be an out of balance tire too

GoldenSahara00 05-03-2013 07:51 PM

Nice dog. I would check tires first then alignment then balljoints. Wheeling can knock you out of alignment just enough sometimes. Rock crawling is nice, the only good places near me you gota pay. I have a nice local spot that has a few little trails we go though. At least your on the right side of the nation for good wheeling!

Ok, i think ill take it in to get them re balanced. If not that then I might go ahead with balljoints being that these have 26k on im assuming stock ones.

I am definitely fortunate on location, got to love all the green around!

I'm thinking of going with c gussets and inner sleeves. That and diff covers too.. Theres lots to do

kramer2k 05-04-2013 11:19 AM

Nice write-up and cool pictures. :thumb:

I was going to recommend you remove the silver Sahara appliqué on the front bumper, but it looks like you yanked that thing off already.

I didn't realize the law cared about fender coverage that much. :nonono: I mean, I knew it was a law on the books but what a waste of time.

Haha, already taken care of :punk:

Certain areas of town are more sticky than others, luckily its not my own but I love the look of this wheel and tire combo. More sophisticated looking

Davidramil03 05-05-2013 06:37 PM

The self cut fenders looked real good. Also like the LED add with the bushwackers.

:thumb: thanks man! I just thought the rear needed some attention, and in my opinion they should come with markers in the rear as well. I just tied the wiring into the tow hitch harness wiring. Hasnt been a problem yet.

MoonyJohn 05-08-2013 09:02 PM

Cut up a couple LCA skids out of some 3/16" laying around the shop. Pretty easy to make, I cut them at 3" x 3 5/8", just need to weld them on. I might cut a little strip that connects the axle to my cut piece, well see.

Im not the most capable of fabbing, guess I have to start somewhere!

MoonyJohn 05-23-2013 12:47 AM

Well I have a tag along project, a little vintage camper trailer. Its a basic 4x8 design but it needs alot of work. Trim is all ugly, all screws are going to be replaced, and there is a ton of dry rot and some moldy spots where moisture got in. I pretty much found out where the worst spots were when I powerwashed it, and it was all around the window, and the door on the other side, so just the front was replaced with some new wood. Had to replaced half the floor, and then I added caulking wherever I could fit it in the front. Still need to put the paneling all back together, the trim, and put the window and door back on so I can seal those up good. Im thinking I will be painting the trailer the same color as the jeep. I have a couple designs in mind, but Im thinking that Ill do the red on the sides, and then black or a dark charcoal that wraps the center from the front around to the back. Dont know yet, but its almost done! Will look sweet behind the jeep! Its camping season soon, and with this thing its camping season all year 'round!

http://i577.photobucket.com/albums/s...pscda8dc69.jpg

Small fraction of what was taken apart.

http://i577.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps48f1420f.jpg

You can see the white mold by the passenger side opening. Nasty stuff, have to replace some paneling too.

http://i577.photobucket.com/albums/s...psd2a28d81.jpg

Floor replaced and the framing almost all done

http://i577.photobucket.com/albums/s...pse5441fbc.jpg

Front end framed, and front paneling put in place. As you can see, alot of caulking http://www.jeepforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

http://i577.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps37f46d85.jpg

Next time Ill update with it all put back together, and then when its all painted! Not a jeep, I know.. but its still pretty cool! Look forward to keeping it along with the JK for years to come.

MoonyJohn 06-03-2013 06:54 PM

Why would the cops pull you over for your original flare mod? no markers or something?

No because the tires stuck out past the fenders. Pretty lame, mainly because I liked the look way better than the bushwackers in my opinion

Im not sure, they might but washington might not be as strict as here. I just got it because I was going through a nice part of town and the cops are really picky. Where I live in town they arent bad. I wouldnt risk it though, better keep them covered just so you dont have to deal with them

MoonyJohn 06-16-2013 08:08 PM

Got the new cover installed the other day. Ordered a front one too cause I liked the rear so much. Cant beat 80 bucks with the shipping!

Picked up a couple things.. Got new headlight bulbs, i chose the silverstar ultras 4000k bulbs. Its amazing how much brighter these are over the stock yellers. I dont even need to run my fogs now, speaking of which now I need some for them too. Also picked up a fire extinguisher, for the future camping trips and hot summer days. You just never know when you might need one! I picked one up at home depot for 20 bucks, and made a velcro strap and a couple zip ties until I get a mount for it here soon.

Coming on order soon!

- Solid 30 cover
- ARB 12v mounted air compressor w/ their orange hose
- Coverking front and rear seat covers, couldnt pass up the sale they were having on quadratec!

Going wheeling tomorrow, should be some pictures in the future as well

You can see how much whiter they are compared to the fogs

Tada!

Went wheeling this last sunday, kept up with rigs that were locked and winching out of things. I never strapped, or got winched out. Score one for me being open and no winch lol
