First glitch
 
My new Rock Lobster Moab has developed an intermittent glitch...

Occasionally but with slowly increasing frequency when I am cruising along a paved road the TCS light, the ABS light and the BRAKE light with blink, the alarm horn beeps and the speedometer needle drops. This lasts less than 1 second then everything clears and we go on normally.

I've seen the speedo thing before on my Explorer. That turned out to be a velocity speed sensor. I am assuming this is the case here. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to it and I can't reproduce it at will.

I asked the dealer about it when I was in for the first oil change and they didn't seem too concerned since there was no CEL light or code. I did the ignition key trick to check the codes (thanks for that tip!) and there are no codes.

My gut is telling me to just go back to the dealer and insist they look at it. The trouble is there isn't much to troubleshoot at this point.

I'm looking for suggestions.

I'd go back. If its a velocity speed sensor it's probably one in 1 wheel. The computer senses your wheels going different speeds and probably turns on the ESP light. With that, it may also try to correct the "problem" by applying brakes or cutting power and you don't want that

How often does it happen? Could you set up a camera on the steering column to record every time you drive to capture it for the dealer?

Had something similar happen with a Rav 4. Turned out to be a bad cell in the battery. Only with the Rav 4, due to electronic steering, the steering gave out. That happened every couple of minutes as I'm going down a mountain road without a place to stop. Gauges went to zero, and several dash warning lights came on.

Had the same thing happen on my 2010. First, they said it was a wheel sensor, which they replaced. A couple of days later, it happened again. Turns out they found a short in the wiring harness was causing the problems. Take it back, make them fix it, document everything, and check the lemon laws in your state.

Dealer just called back after having it all day. They can't reproduce the problem. I showed them the video I made of it but since there's no CEL it's hard for them to diagnose.

I'm going to pick it up and watch everything carefully. Stay tuned.

Based on threads on here, my SWAG is loose or pinched harness or something with the clock spring.

:dance:Looks like it was a very loose negative battery cable. Someone on YouTube had posted a video of their 2012 doing the very same thing. He gave me the tip. I went out to check and sure enough mine was very loose. I tightened it down with a 10mm socket and the problem has not recurred today.

yet the 'highly trained' dealer mechanics couldn't pick up on that? and didn't know enough about past experiences to check that?

*shudders in fear of the first dealer visit that is bound to happen*

I did point that out in the survey that I did online today. We'll see where that goes. Supposedly they gave it a "World Class Inspection" whatever that means.

To be honest, I think they looked at it for maybe 15 minutes then put it out back and forgot about it. The mechanics these days seem to be completely dependent on the OBD-II codes to tell them what's wrong. This problem doesn't drop a code, which seems odd to me. In retrospect that should have pointed me towards some kind of power issue but then again I'm not supposed to have to resort to the Internet to figure out a factory foul-up with a brand-new vehicle.

I'm waiting to see if the service manager contacts me since I did give not-great feedback on the service. I'll discuss it with him.

The one thing saving them is they didn't charge me anything for the visit. I would be a lot more upset if I had had to pay some bogus "diagnostic fee" or other nonsense.
