Help me choose the right Steering gear...

OK, I own a 2001 I6 4.0L jeep, I am aware that my steering gear has been leaking. My mechanic wants to charge 285$ for the unit itself. What I plan on doing is buying one from rockauto.com and have them(my mechanic) install it since this is beyond my abilities.

Now my problem is there are several to choose from at rock auto. Some are 3 bolt version, some are 4. My choice are refurbished which shouldn't be an issue as they do carry a limited warranty. How do I know if I have 3 or 4 bolts ect? From what the site tells me, all will fit but I would rather know which is most appropriate for my jeep. I understand I could get a durango one but I'm slanted toward keeping it in line with what the manufacturer used.

Thanks in advance for any help...

Have you verified that the mechanic will warranty his work if the unit you provides is defective?

Yours will be running a 3 bolt its a Saginaw style steering box and I would stay away from refurbished. There not really all that hard to replace its doable with a basic toolset and rent a Pitman arm puller.

No, I haven't thought of that. He's been my mech for god knows how long and I have brought in other parts from rockauto.com to install so I'm guessing this should not be an issue.

The only new one that is available from rockauto is this one: OMIX-ADA Part # 1800410 which costs CAD$576.42 plus 60$ for shipping. outside my budget. All others listed are refurbished for my year and engine size go from 94$-194$ plus 60$ to ship.

This is one of my choices since its 3 bolt and least expensive but has a limited lifetime warranty: More Information for LARES 1353

bump for help, only got 3 more days before my discount code expires for rockauto :)

I've never dealt with rock auto but if you have to warranty a part out how hard is it to do shipping it back and all? Just something to consider.

I've only returned one part to them a few months ago. I had to pay return shipping. The process wasn't bad but to send back a steering gear box, shipping to me costs 60$ and another to send it back. So 120$ if it don't work out... :( So I'm hoping that I can get a few more hits on my thread before I make up my mind...

I'll check at NAPA tomorrow then and look up those part numbers from your earlier post and see what the cost on the durango steering gear runs me. Tho I did check the prices on rockauto for them and dodge part runs higher on cost then for jeep. Maybe I may luck out on costs if I go local. Thanks for link!!

Thanks everyone who helped me make up my mind on what to get for my steering gear. Went with stock version. Yes I understand about the durango version being more like an upgrade but it won't be useful for me as I'm only running 31's and according to the write up Durango Steering Gear Swap they say its really only good for those running 34's and up(which I don't plan on). After cost and shipping I made out on 175$CAN which is hell of alot better then 285$CAN from my local shop even tho I checked the prices all over online and local parts stores as well in my region. I would like to point out that even tho the part is re-manufactured, it has a lifetime warranty(which I double checked with the company that makes it) so again, I am not at a loss.
