Clicking sound when coasting?

Driving a 2000 jeep tj 4.0 with a 5 speed manual and whenever i coast to a stop in gear with the clutch depressed, i hear an audible clicking/ rattling sound coming from the transmission area. cant tell if it is the transfer case or tranny, but the clicking sound only happens when coasting in 1st or 2nd and goes away completely in neutral. Is this a common sound i should just expect or is this something problematic i should be concerned with?

I have the same sound, around 15 mph or less, also goes away when in neutral. Also some rattling when sitting in neutral with clutch out. Will be interested to hear what the deal is.. :)

Are you familiar with throw out bearing symptoms? Have you been able to eliminate that as the culprit?

Not to hijack the thread, but here goes. Mine is just when slowing down, the noise while idling with the clutch out seems pretty normal. I get kind of a clank, clank, clank from about 15 mph down to a stop, then it goes away.

Or maybe more of a click click, click.....

I had the same type of problems. It was all in the u joints. Sounds ridiculous but those suckers seem to keep on being the culprit of all my worry provoking sounds

So are we talking drive shaft u-joints or front end u-joints? or both lol? i hadnt thought it would be them but im open to try n hammer out all the possibilites. also not familiar with the throwout bearing so i may look into that as well.

ok so a quick checklist i found on another forum pretty much rules out the throwout bearing and pretty much labels that noise as normal transmission chatter typical of the NV3550. The basic point is that the tranny will normally make chatter with the clutch all the way up, but if it makes any rattling with the clutch depressed, then it is more than likely a throwout bearing issue.

Just put my '02 in the shop this AM with same thing. They sad u-joints and maybe pinion . They are going to call when they get it on a lift and check it all out.

Mine was the front ujoint on the rear drive shaft

So it sounded like the gear box cause it was close to the gear box

I kind of narrowed mine down to some sort of driveline issue. I'm not 100% positive, but I don't think it makes the noise in 4 HI. It really isn't that loud, drowned out by engine noise and wind, so I'm not sure how concerned I should be...
