Moving to Gayloard area. need advice
1 Attachment(s)
So I am currently going through the interview process for a job out between Gayload, Alpena and West Branch. Can anyone tell me about life in this area and these towns. I've read city data and everything. But I know the Upper Peninsula offers a different life than what i'm used to. I've lived in the Seattle, WA area, Colorado Springs, CO and El Paso, TX. Can you locals explain life in the area. best school districts for my kids. good safe communities to live in. And last but not least best places for Jeepin.

Oh and here's my jeep

I'm an hour north of Gaylord and just moved up here not long ago. It's very quiet in the winter, but picks up a lot in the summer. Mild ORV trails with a few pretty good off road parks in the area. I'm a member of a local 4x4 club which has a few members in that area.
They are big into hunting, fishing, boating and anything outdoors. If you are a hockey player they have a couple of men's leagues in the area. There are miles and miles of snowmobile and ATV trails.
Nice people and not much crime. I'm not sure of the schools in that area, but they have a rating system for all of the schools in Michigan.
Good luck with the interview.

Been living an hour east of Gaylord near Alpena since 1996. Cost of living is low. Quality of living is high. Schools don't score quite as high as some Southern MI schools do but the teachers and students interact better than most. I considered that a good trade off. If you like to ski, hunt, fish, boat, trail ride or do anything else outdoors you couldn't find a better place to live for 4 season sports. Winter is longer but easier to live with than most areas. We get plenty of snow but it is almost always very easy to manage. You will never be stuck in a traffic jam, never!

Thanks for the quick response guys. If anyone else wants to chime in feel free. Also if anyone knows a rental realtor out there that isn't a sham please link me. Thanks again.

I'm in East Tawas, on the coast, about an hour+ east if where you're talking about. Best description... Laid back ;)

I live in Gaylord and work in Johannesburg, slower life style.. Yes and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.:thumb: Winters are the real deal up here, Gaylord gets about 150 inches of snow each year, less than that the farther east you go, more the farther west. Good skiing down hill and cross country, snowmobile trails all over the place. Summers are Great, lots of lakes, and rivers, fishing, boating, top notch blue ribbon trout streams!! Something like 30 golf courses in the area. If shopping and malls are your thing then Traverse City is like an hour drive so not too bad. The Pigeon Rive State Forest is nice for fishing or just two tracking thru the woods.
Camp Grayling has some areas open to the public for some 4 wheeling in your Jeep.
If you like friendly people, low crime. 4 seasons, a beautiful place to live, then this is for you!!
