Instrument panel
 
Just bought my first a few days ago ('99), the instrument panel only works about a third of the time, any advice is welcome. Thanks.

Light bulb is shot. Buy an led kit which ever color you want and do the swap.it's pretty simple and a lot brighter, plus they'll last forever being leds

Thank you, the gauges themselves don't work either (odometer, gas, temp)

The cluster has a pair of connectors on the back. It's a plug in type of deal. The contacts can become dirty or corroded and cause intermittent problems. It's a pretty easy fix. The cluster isn't hard to remove. There have been several write ups and even some youtube videos on how to do it. I'll see if I can round up a link before someone else does.

The walkthrough starts at about the 2:54 mark. Someone may correct me, but I don't think you have to remove the center dash bezel to gain access to the instrument cluster. The biggest pain for me is getting the lower panel past the ignition switch. If you have a tilt wheel, it'll probably be a lot easier. Even if you don't, it's still not too bad. When you get the cluster removed, you can come back and post pics if you want, so we can see what's going on.

Like I said, it's fairly easy. The only tool I need on my 97 is a phillips screwdriver.

Man! I had the cluster out of my Ranger the other day. The Jeep was soooo much easier!

Throwing in LED's while you have the cluster out isn't a bad idea, either! :thumb:

Some people have said they needed to "tweak" the terminals on the back of the cluster - just a tiny bit - to give them a little tighter connection.

I gave each of the male connector pins in the connectors a very slight squeeze with needle nose pliers to give them just a tad fatter profile & then reconnected the connectors. Voila, no more intermittent instrument cluster.

also the connectors could just have dust or something in them. You could try spraying some alcohol in them and wiping it down with a lint free cloth, or get some pipe cleaners and lightly brush around the connectors. the alcohol will evaporate off fairly quickly. a little cleaning does wonders for electrical connections some times, and it cost relatively nothing to do.
