CB...handheld or fixed?

What is everyone's thought and experience. I've never used handheld. I kind would like a PA to yell at people on the road though. But I've never had that either.

I went with handheld with 4ft mounted antenna. With the amount I would actually use it and as much as the top/doors are off, I did not want to add something more that could be stolen.

I'm leaning towards a portable model myself with a mounted antenna. Still researching though b

From the research I'm doing:

If you're just going to use it on the trail, a handheld is probably good enough (range a few hundred feet)

If you need a bit more range (a mile maybe), then a handheld with an external antenna.

If you want to talk to truckers, other vehicles, etc. then a fixed unit with a well grounded and SWR matched antenna

If you want to sound like a trucker, then one of the export radios or a conventional radio with a bit of extra power...

That's what I decided to go with. install takes up no real space and I can easily unscrew the unit from the control box, if needed, for security reasons.

control box in under glove box an connection is easy to reach.

Na yes that is a holster mounted close to it. The great laws here in LA allow me to do this. :D

I like the mounted Holster, good for you.

What are you using to mount the handheld to the console? I need to find something for my Midland handheld. All I can seem to find are mounts for phones or gps devices but they don't look like they would work for a cb handheld.

Fixed......unless you want it to be just purtty

sorry, I must be a dunce. Fixed, how?

I'm looking for a mount that could either stay permanently fixed, or it be one of those suction cup mounts, I just haven't found one that would work, especially in the location shown by mjpjr45 in the pic above.

edit: that actually looks like where the power outlet is located, maybe that's not where I would want to mount it. Could be something like this although I need one for a 2010 JKU.

How about this?

brighton 05-05-2013 12:02 PM

yep, that's the one I saw, but it's specific to 2011-2013 model years. I think the handle changed after 2010 which is how that is mounted.

How about custom making something? Anyone have any ideas?

mjpjr45 05-05-2013 08:57 PM

Yeah I mounted mine where the optional power source is. Mine didn't have it, just had that little plug with the clip on it. I cut the clip off and then mounted the hanger thing supplied with the CB. I figured better to drill into it, than the dash, since it is easily replaced, if I ever get rid of the CB.

I went with the Midland 75-822 w/ 4' Firestik. Love the fact I can power the unit via the 12v outlet in my center console and store it there as well. When in use, I just run the cord through the notch on the top edge of the console and looks like a factory install.

I also have the Midland 75-822 which I power with the outlet in the console. Do you have a pic of how yours is mounted when in use?

I figured out I just needed to use the right search term for options to mount a handheld to the console. "CB microphone hanger" gives lots of choices from hooks to peel-and-stick holders to hangers that screw on. Just need to figure out the best place to mount the hanger and how permanent it will be.

Tuffy CB mount

2 Attachment(s)
I just put in a Tuffy CB radio security console #142 for Jeep to hold my fixed Cobra 29 LTD BT 40-Channel CB. Not ideal as fairly large but the roof will still come off and it does lock. I think it is sturdy but I have not tested it yet on the trail. Four foot Firestik II antenna on rear tire holder but I was warned that this is not a great place for this as not attached to major metal and in a bad location. I have been told that Bluetooth is a bad idea and weakens the power of the CB. I would not get this feature again.
